Mastoid surface area-to-volume ratios in adult brazilian individuals

Abstract: Mastoid surface areas and volumes of adult Brazilian subjects followed a linear correlation, as also described in studies carried out in other countries. Mean surface areas and volumes were higher than previously published, unlike surface area-to-volume ratios, which were lower. Further studies with larger populations will provide evidence as to whether Brazilian subjects have larger surface areas and volumes than other populations.

“…According to Lima et al . 36 , mastoid surface areas and volume follow a linear correlation. This implies that an increased pneumatization denotes an increased surface area, which increases the distances observed between these vessels and ear regions as pneumatization increases.…”

“…The mastoid air cells also serve as a gas reservoir that compensates for changes in pressure in the middle ear and provides insulation against heat changes. 9 Lima et al 10 stated that the volumetric analysis of mastoid air cells plays a key role in understanding the mastoid physiology and pathogenesis and that computed tomography (CT) is the best way to determine mastoid pneumatization. Due to its low dose of radiation and rapid imaging, CBCT has recently emerged as an alternative to CT to evaluate anatomical structures in the maxillofacial region.…”

“…Swarts et al found that the surface area of MACS was a linear function of volume 158 . A cross‐sectional cohort study without history of pediatric COM examined the surface area and volume of MACS based on 3D CT reconstruction of TBs 159 . Gene analysis of the developing ME revealed 5 enriched bone‐related gene sets 160 …”
