Florida is the top producer of fresh market tomatoes in the U.S., with an average production of 0.4 million metric tons. Tomatoes are commercially grown on plastic mulched raised beds in Southwest Florida, the primary production region in the state. Low tomato yield in plasticulture production is often associated with the poor control of nutsedge species. Nutsedge management, therefore, remains a critical production challenge for tomato growers in Florida. Sandy soil in this region promotes herbicide movement after heavy rainfall or irrigation, affecting weed suppression. This will also potentially impact the timely establishment of new tomato transplants and, consequently, the crop vigor if the herbicides get into the root zone. This review aims to present and discuss an overview of available options to safely manage major weeds of tomatoes, including nutsedge species, in plasticulture production. In addition, this review seeks to discuss an approach for utilizing herbicide adjuvants, such as spray deposition agents or oil binding agents, to improve herbicides’ efficacy and tomato crop safety by enhancing their retention in plastic mulched raised beds.

RESUMOPlantas invasoras são todas as espécies de plantas exóticas em dado ecossistema, por interferir negativamente na produção de determinado cultivo comercial, são muito conhecidas também como "ervas-daninhas". O objetivo do presente estudo, foi avaliar a eficiência do feijão-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformes) no controle de agressividade de plantas invasoras em um plantio de maracujá de uma propriedade onde se desenvolve a agricultura familiar, no sudeste paraense. Para isto, utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com seis repetições e os seguintes tratamentos: (T0) Testemunha; (T1) Feijão-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformes), (T2) Roçagem manual e (T3) Capina. Cada uma com 3,00 x 7,00 m, em um total de 24 parcelas. Além disto, foram efetuados um levantamento florístico da área e as plantas daninhas identificadas utilizando-se um quadrado de madeira de 0,60 x 0,60m, arremessado 20 vezes ao acaso sobre linhas transversais em formato de X. A partir disto, observou-se uma grande variação de plantas invasoras no cultivo agrícola, no qual houve predominância de Gramínea (Digitaria ciliares). Os dados indicaram ainda que o tratamento com feijão-de-porco foi o mais eficiente no controle das plantas invasoras (63,86%), enquanto que a roçagem manual e a capina não diferiram significativamente. Já para a quantidade de frutos por parcela, nenhum dos tratamentos apresentou diferença significativa. Dessa forma, mesmo sem contribuir com o aumento na produtividade do plantio de maracujá, notou-se que o feijão-de-porco apresentou eficiência na inibição do desenvolvimento de plantas invasoras. Conservation tillage practices mainly based on cover crops and no-tillage with accumulation of crop residues at the soil surface (mulch) modify the environmental fate of pesticides. However, only few pesticide fate models are able to consider mulch of crop residues as well as the effect of intermediate cover crops. Thus, the objective was to develop an approach to model the effects of crop residues left at the soil surface and cover crops on the fate of pesticides. This approach consisted in (1) considering the crop residues as a soil layer with specific physical, hydrodynamic and pesticide-reactivity properties close to that of a high organic content soil layer, and (2) introducing a correction factor of the potential evapotranspiration, estimated through a calibration step, to take into account the reduction of soil evaporation by the presence of a mulch. This approach was developed using MACRO as support pesticide model. To assess the model performances, we used the data from a field experiment designed in an irrigated maize monoculture under conservation tillage. Soil water content, water percolates, soil temperature and S-metolachlor herbicide concentrations in the leachate at 1m depth were measured during two years. The approach chosen to simulate the mulch effects allowed MACRO to make acceptable predictions of the observed water percolation, soil temperature and to a less extent herbicide leaching. However, it showed a poor performance to simulate the soil water content. Results are discussed in terms of further modelling options to better assess the environmental risks of pesticides under conservation tillage. This approach remains to be tested against various soils, crops, pesticides and types of mulch.
