Phytochemical investigation on the leaves of Tarenna obtusifolia Merr. (Rubiaceae) led to the isolation and identification of vomifoliol (1), p-coumaric acid (2), and stigmasterol (3) based on spectroscopic analyses and comparison with the literature data. Compound 1 moderately inhibited the aggregation of amyloid-beta (Aβ 1-42 ) using the ThT assay (55.71% at 50 μM) and exhibited neuroprotective effects against amyloid-beta (Aβ 1-42 )-induced cytotoxicity in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells at 20 μM concentration. This is the first phytochemical study on T. obtusifolia and the first report on the Aβ aggregation activity and neuroprotective potential of vomifoliol (1).

Context: Antiacetylcholinesterase (AChE) drugs have been a main therapeutic treatment for Alzheimer’s disease because increased AChE levels play a key role in reducing neurotransmission.Objectives: Extracts from 35 Korean plants were selected and screened for antioxidant and anti-cholinesterase activity to explore new sources derived from Korean natural resources that could be used as AD therapeutic agents.Materials and methods: The antioxidant effect of extracts from 35 selected Korean plants was determined using two most common free radical scavenging assays using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS). Additionally, the effect of extracts, identified as antioxidants, on acetylcholinesterase inhibition was assessed by an acetylcholinesterase assay kit.Results: Out of 36 extracts of 35 plants tested, Oenothera biennis L. (9.09 μg/mL), Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill. (9.52 μg/mL) and Betula platyphylla var. japonica (9.85 μg/mL) showed strong DPPH scavenging activity. Twelve other extracts also exerted moderate free radical scavenging activities with IC50 values ranging from 10 to 50 μg/mL. Antioxidant capacity detected by ABTS assay was only significant in O. biennis (23.40 μg/mL), while the other extracts were weak or unable to reduce the production of ABTS. Based on the antioxidant activities of these plant extracts, 19 extracts with IC50 values less than 100 μg/mL in DPPH assay were selected for further AChE inhibition assay. Among the extracts tested, the IC50 value for Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina NAKAI (18.83 μg/mL) in AChE inhibitory activity was the lowest, followed by O. biennis (20.09 μg/mL) and Pharbitis nil Chosy (22.79 μg/mL).Conclusions: Considering complex multifactorial etiology of AD, the extracts of P. vulgaris var. lilacina (aerial part), O. biennis (seed) and P. nil (seed) may be safe and ideal candidates for future AD modifying therapies.

Hyperlipidemia is a gear in a big cascade leading to fatal disease ending in death especially among elderly patients. The reduction in serum cholesterol may alter or save the human life away from cardiovascular risks. Due to what called "drug side effects" and the failure of modern medicine to control this issue. So, the use of natural products in remedy becomes the famous topic Raphanus sativus L. (Cruciferaceae), commonly known as radish. Radish, Raphanus sativus L., is an annual vegetable belonging to the family Cruciferae and is a traditionally important vegetable in many countries All plant parts are edible and it has been used in folk medicine. The present study was designed to evaluate phytochemical analysis and hypolipidemic activity of radish seed oil (RSO) in a hyperlipidemic rat model induced by a high -fat diet (HFD). GC/MS of the Radish oil seed fatty acid methyl esters revealed that the major fatty acids were unsaturated fatty acids, and saturated fatty acids (79%, 21 %) of total fatty acids respectively. Twenty-four rats were divided into three groups, group I as control, group II fed with high-fat diet (HFD), and group III fed with HFD and administered RSO orally (70 μl/Kg) for ten weeks. Results showed that Raphanus sativus seed oil significantly inhibits the body weight gain of rats induced by HFD, significantly reducing concentration levels of plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol in hyperlipidemic rats. Conclusion Raphanus sativus seed oil has good hypolipidemic effects on hyperlipidemic rats thus suggesting its beneficial effect in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases associated with hyperlipidemia.
