Background: The number of elderly in Brazil gradually increases. Among some chronic diseases that emerge with aging, depression is highlighted. In elderly women this problem is more prevalent due to factors related to the female population in this age group. Objective: Comprehend the experiences of older women with depression. Methods: Qualitative study, developed in four Psychosocial Care Center II, the city of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil with eight elderly women with depression. Data were collected in March and April 2015, through open interviews. Content analysis enabled the formulation of three categories. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (Process nº 890 501). Results: The experience of elderly woman with depression is permeated by emotional symptoms such as fear, depression, anhedonia, crying and suicidal ideas. That walk in the Depression they point to the need for aid (medical or otherwise) and coping strategies (walking and religion) to assist in overcoming this problem. Conclusion: The experiences of these women contributes to the treatment, as there is wealth of information in these reports that enables the improvement of individual and humanized care.

“…When analyzing the correlation of the domains of quality of life with depression, we observed an inverse correlation, i.e., the higher the depressive symptomatology, the worse the quality of life. We noticed that the most intense correlations were with the domains "Satisfaction with life" and "Concern with Health, " which we could already expect since depression causes mood changes (24) . There is, therefore, the existence of negative feelings, in addition to multiple somatic complaints, and also a differentiated perception of oneself, so that the individuals begin to see their problems as catastrophic (25) .…”

Correlation between quality of life, depression, satisfaction and functionality of older people with HIV

Objective: To analyze the correlation between the quality of life, depression, life satisfaction, and functional capacity in elderly people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Methods: A cross-sectional study developed in reference hospitals for treatment and follow-up of people with HIV. 241 elderly people participated by applying a questionnaire containing sociodemographic variables, the HIV/AIDS target quality of Life, the Barthel Index, the Life Satisfaction Scale, and the abbreviated version with 15 items of the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale. Results: The analyses showed an inverse correlation between the dimensions of the HAT-Qol with depression, a positive correlation in the domain satisfaction with life, and statistically significant, but weak, with functionality. Conclusion: Depression impairs quality of life in all dimensions, while life satisfaction influences this aspect more positively than functional capacity. To analyze the cognitive ability of elderly people assisted by the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in a northeastern Brazilian city, a cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted with 406 elderly assisted by the FHS in Mossoro-RN, Brazil, from March to May 2014. The data were collected through two validated questionnaires. For the data analysis, the Alpha Cronbach's, Kruskal-Wallis test, chi-square and Pearson correlation statistical tests were applied. There was a predominance of women (67.98%) in the survey. Among the respondents, 50% had an index of up to 27 points in Pfeffer Instrument, identifying greater degree of dependence in performing instrumental daily activities related to mobility in the community (39.7%) and financial management (57.1%). On Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), 75% of seniors had an index above 27 points, with the scores classification as standard (50.99%), mild (25.12%), moderate (22.66%) and severe (1.23%). Although changes have been identified in cognitive performance and independence of elderly people in some areas, these difficulties do not completely affect the lives and daily activities of the elderly.
