Na Caatinga a exploração de recursos naturais realizada de forma indiscriminada provoca danos dificilmente remediáveis no âmbito ambiental, social e econômico. Nessa perspectiva, esta pesquisa analisou a percepção ambiental sobre os recursos florestais da caatinga em diferentes comunidades rurais. O estudo foi realizado com moradores das comunidades de Aroeira e Santana, ambas localizadas no município de Olivedos – Paraíba. Trata-se de um estudo etnobiológico/etnobotânico, de abordagem metodológica qualitativa e quantitativa. Foram entrevistados 65 informantes (53 moradores da Comunidade de Aroeiras) e (12 moradores da Comunidade de Santana), entre homens e mulheres, responsáveis pelas residências. A entrevista semiestruturada, ocorreu no período de maio a agosto de 2022. As informações foram enriquecidas e confirmadas com a utilização de outras técnicas de investigação como a observação participativa e a turnê guiada. Os dados obtidos foram transcritos, posteriormente categorizados e tabulados em planilha Excel. Como resultado constatou-se que os participantes identificam e/ou usam mais de 80 espécies de plantas distribuídas em sete categorias das quais destacam-se alimentação humana, medicinal e madeira (para combustível e construção). Em relação à percepção positiva, os entrevistados percebem a Caatinga como bioma, beleza, bem-estar, diversidade, mata fechada, resiliência, riqueza e vegetação, já as indicações negativas foram seca, sofrimento e escassez. Essa dicotomia reflete a realidade do ambiente, demonstrando que viver na região da caatinga lhes confere, para além das dificuldades, qualidade de vida pelo tipo de vegetação, beleza e diversidade de espécies úteis. Discute-se a importância dos recursos florestais, como estes são utilizados e a implicação para a conservação da Caatinga.
