Hoplias malabaricus is a non-migratory fish commonly found in the Mogi Guaçu River basin, mainly feeding on fish, small crustaceans and insects. It forms part of the diet for humans, birds and some mammals. This fish has great nutritional value, with both good quality and good quantities of essential vitamins and amino acids. Regarding parasitic fauna, this fish can host different species of helminths in its gastrointestinal tract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible interference of parasitism in the meat yield from H. malabaricus and the centesimal composition. For this purpose, fish specimens were collected from marginal lagoons of the Mogi Guaçu River (Pirassununga, state of São Paulo, Brazil) using hooks and fishing nets. We found that all specimens of H. malabaricus were parasitized by at least one species, including larvae of Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae). Parasitism did not have any significant influence on centesimal composition, but meat yield was negatively correlated with the abundance of larvae.

The present study was performed to assess the proximate and nutrient content of rainbow trout flesh, cultured in the Doi Inthanon Fisheries Research Unit, Chiang Mai Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center, Thailand. 240 fish were randomly distributed across 12 cages with 20 fish cage-1. Sixteen individual fish from each cage were randomly collected at different ages of 10, 12 and 24 months. Body composition, pH, water-holding capacity, shear force, collagen content analysis, sensory, lipid oxidation, and fatty acids profile were evaluated. The results indicated that body composition and carcass length were significantly higher in fish aged 24 months, except for carcass and viscero-somatic index percentages (P ≤ 0.05). Fish at 24 months showed significantly higher pH, moisture, fat, shear force, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and total collagen content values than fish at 10 and 12 months (P ≤ 0.05). However, protein percentage, sensory measurement and water-holding capacity were significantly higher in younger fish at 10 and 12 months. The average lipid content and n-6/n-3 ratios were significantly greater in fish at 12 months and in ventral fillets (P ≤ 0.05). However, polyunsaturated fatty acids: saturated fatty acid ratio was higher in fish at 24 months and in dorsal fillets. In conclusion, rainbow trout cultured in subtropical , montane conditions can be valuable sources of protein, unsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acids, and docosahexaenoic acids.

A presença de metais pesados no ambiente aquático pode ser originada de forma natural, por intemperismo das rochas ou por ações antropogênicas, com lançamento de resíduos e esgoto sem tratamento. O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar a concentração dos metais Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb e Zn em amostras de peixes, como o jundiá (Rhamdia quelen), traíra (Hoplias malabaricus), voga (Cyphocharax voga) e joaninha (Crenicichla punctata) coletados da Lagoa Mangueira – RS. Analisou-se os tecidos dos músculos, brânquias e vísceras dos peixes. Dois métodos de digestão foram avaliados na decomposição do músculo do jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) e o método escolhido digeriu as amostras de tecido dos peixes em solução de HNO3/H2O2 2:1 (v/v), sob ultrassom à 70ºC por 10 min. Em paralelo, foi analisado o material certificado DORM-3 para avaliar a exatidão do método empregado na digestão das amostras. A ordem de distribuição dos metais pesados nos tecidos dos músculos, brânquias e vísceras das espécies analisadas foi Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb, sendo o Cr e Pb quantificados somente nas partes investigadas da traíra (Hoplias malabaricus) e o Ni não foi detectado em nenhuma espécie. Através do cálculo do fator de bioacumulação (FBA) avaliou-se o nível de metais no sedimento que pode se tornar biodisponível para os peixes. Os analitos foram quantificados utilizando a espectrometria de absorção atômica com chama (F AAS).
