Evaluation of antibacterial and antioxidant activities of three types of benzoin resin

Abstract: The benzoin resin is used extensively in traditional medicine for its many reported therapeutic properties. The essential oils of three different types of benzoin resin were extracted using the traditional method in this study. The yield of essential oils of the white, red and gray types of resin was 1.01, 0.92 and 0.54%, respectively. The obtained extracts were tested against two types of pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The tests showed that essential oil of gray type resin is… Show more

“…Equal volume of 100 μM 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in methanol was added to different concentrations of test compounds (100 μM/mL) in methanol, assorted well and kept in the dark for 20 min. The absorbance at 517 nm was measured by using the spectrophotometer UV-1650, Shimadzu [41][42][43]. By plotting the percentage of DPPH• scavenging against concentration, it gives the standard curve.…”

“…The isolated compounds, namely aloe-emodin and aloin from aloe excelsa leaves, demonstrated antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacterial strains, including S. aureus 19 . Benzoin resin containing an isolated compound such as an essential oil can reportedly inhibit Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli 12 . The presence of considerable numbers of the flavonoids and esters of phenolic acids in propolis are responsible for its antibacterial activities [40][41][42] .…”

“…The major constituents of benzoin resin are conifeyl benzoate, benzoic acid, cinnamic acid and p-carmaryl cinnamate, as well as triterpenoids as minor compounds 11 . These components exhibit antibacterial and antioxidant activities 12 . Propolis collected by bees from plant resins has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries.…”

“…Styrax benzoides resin decreases air‐borne bacteria on fumigation (Bhatwalkar et al, 2019), due to the action of phenols (Hacini et al, 2018). Phenolic compounds in T. gallica have a bacteriostatic effect by the destruction of cell wall and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis (Boulaaba et al, 2015).…”
