Inhibitive action of Bridelia retusa leaves extract on corrosion of mild steel in acidic media

Abstract: KEYWORDSExtract of Bridelia retusa leaves was investigated as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 1 N H2SO4 using conventional weight loss, electrochemical polarizations, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic studies. The weight loss results showed that the extract of Bridelia retusa leaves is excellent corrosion inhibitor and electrochemical polarizations data revealed the mixed mode of inhibition. While the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have shown that … Show more

“…This occurrence has been reported elsewhere [18,24]. In the presence of the extract, the inhibition efficiency increased up to a temperature of 303 K, and after that there was a decline from 318 -348 K. Maximum inhibition efficiency was found to be 97.70% and minimum of [25,26,27], adsorption and desorption of inhibitor molecules continuously occur at the metal surface, and an equilibrium exists between these two processes at a particular temperature. This shows that there is an active-passive region in the corrosion process of mild steel in the studied environment.…”

“…To calculate the surface coverage θ it was assumed that the inhibitor efficiency (IE%) is due mainly to the blocking effect of the adsorbed species and hence (IE% = θ × 100) [33]. In order to gain insight into the mode of adsorption of the extract on carbon steel surface, the surface coverage values from EFM technique were theoretically fitted into different adsorption isotherms and the values of correlation coefficient (R 2 ) were used to determine the best fit isotherm.…”
