A pesquisa objetivou a comparação da tomada de decisão de treinadores de voleibol por meio das estratégias de busca visual em função dos seus anos de experiência. A amostra constituiu-se por trinta e quatro treinadores de voleibol (n=34) com idade média de 32,5 ± 9,4 anos. Assim, configuraram-se dois grupos: principiantes (2,8 ± 1,9 anos de prática) e experientes (19 ± 7,2 anos de prática). Para avaliação do conhecimento tático relacionado aos aspectos da tomada de decisão os treinadores realizaram a análise das cenas de ataque de extremidade do Teste de Conhecimento Tático Declarativo no Voleibol. Os resultados relacionados às estratégias visuais na análise das cenas constataram similaridade entre os dois grupos (p>0,05), sendo que o poder do efeito variou entre pequeno e moderado para as variáveis analisadas. Neste contexto, percebeu-se que as estratégias visuais utilizadas entre os treinadores com diferentes tempos de experiência foram semelhantes.

From a cognitive-psychological perspective, physical exercise (PE) and sports are an interesting tool for improving people’s cognitive abilities. One field of application for such a tool is decision making (DM) support in chronic patients, cancer patients, and survivors in particular. On the one hand, cancer patients and survivors have to continually take important decisions about their own care (e.g., treatment choice; changes in lifestyle), in collaboration with caregivers and health providers; on the other hand, side effects of treatment may be detrimental to cognitive abilities, such as attention, which make the health DM tasks even more demanding, complex, and emotionally disruptive for patients. Since cancer patients have to engage in healthy activities both for improving their own quality of life and for sustaining the effects of medications, clinical advice to engage in sport and PE is becoming more and more widespread within interventions. However, while sports are usually seen as healthy physical activities, their impact on cognitive abilities is mostly overlooked in the literature. The hypothesis of the present work is that sports could be fully exploited in their potential as focused exercises for cognitive ability training, in the field of cognitive training for chronic patients specifically. Indeed, literature shows that different sports (e.g., individual or team-based) influence and possibly augment cognitive abilities such as focused and divided attention, working memory, and DM under time constraints. Moreover, besides providing training for cognitive abilities, the experience of sports may represent an opportunity to explore, train and sharpen DM abilities directly: we identify five ways in which sport experiences may influence DM processes, and provide indications for future research on the topic.

Factors Used to Make Appropriate Decisions in Youth Categories in Volleyball

The study aim was to examine the associations between the category of play and the factors athletes use to make appropriate decisions. We observed 6567 game actions performed by 144 athletes. All game actions involved appropriate decisions. The study variables were factors on which appropriate decision-making is based (for five game actions in volleyball: serve, reception, setting, attack, block) and game category (Under-14, Under-16, Under-19). Our analysis—using contingency tables, the Chi-square test, and Cramer’s V—revealed a significant association between the two variables across the five actions. In the U-14 category, and sometimes in the U-16 category, it was more frequent than the expected random frequency that appropriate decisions were of low tactical complexity, focused on the performance of the skill, with an attentional focus on close elements, of low risk, and with actions of reduced difficulty and precision. For the U-19 category, it was more frequent than the expected random frequency that decisions were of greater tactical complexity, with an attentional focus on the opposing team, considering more relevant stimuli, with greater risk, and with greater time pressure. There is, therefore, a need for coaches to understand the decision-making skills of athletes from early on, as this will allow them to develop tasks and apply cognitive strategies that are adapted to the level of the athlete and that can ultimately improve decision-making further.
