Abstract: Organic plant extracts and emulsified oil of Azadirachta indica A. Juss (Meliaceae) (neem) were studied to evaluate its effects in control of engorged females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in the laboratory. Hexane and alcoholic organic extracts, 2% (weight/volume) were used in tests of immersion for 5 minutes, prepared with seeds, solubilized in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to 1%. The experiment was entirely randomized, consisting of 6 treatments and 5 replicates, each represented by 5… Show more

“…Souza et al (2000) produced a concentrated emulsion of green fruits that was tested at concentrations of 0.25 and 0.5% and showed efficacies ranging from 46.7 to 82.6% and from 16.6 to 89.0%, respectively. Broglio-Micheletti et al (2010) analyzed the efficacies of a neem hexane extract and a 2% oil concentration against R. (B.)…”

“…Sardá-Ribeiro et al ( 2008 ) evaluated the hexane extract from the aerial parts of Calea serrata to control larvae and adults of R. sanguineus and R. microplus , showing 100% mortality in the larvae of both tick species and a reduction in oviposition of 11–14%. In two studies conducted by Broglio-Micheletti et al ( 2009 , 2010 ), extracts and commercial products using A. indica were evaluated. Ethanolic extracts from leaves and hexanic extracts from seeds had efficacy of 2.3 and 38.4, respectively, on R. microplus female reproduction (Broglio-Micheletti et al 2009 ).…”

“…The effects of neem active ingredients on ticks have been demonstrated in studies on Amblyomma variegatum (Ndumu, George, & Choudhur, ), Hyalomma dromedarii (Al‐Raijhi, Al‐Ahmed, Hussein, & Kleir, ), H.excavatum anatolicum (Abdel‐Shafy & Zayed, ), Rhipicephalus decoloratus (Choudhury, ), R.(Boophilus) microplus (Broglio‐Micheletti et al, ; Srivastava, Ghosh, & Mandal, ) and R. sanguineus (Denardi et al, ), and the chemical was proven to affect the reproductive processes and the mortality rate in these species.…”
