Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the dynamics and profile of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) in an old colonization area in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Health departments of municipalities in the Central-Southern region that had notified cases to the Ministry of Health's Notifiable Diseases Information System between 1997 and 2002 were contacted to obtain data. “…The fact that the majority of the studied population acquired the infection at their domicile is consistent with the peri-urban epidemiological profile of the disease in Rio de Janeiro 6 . Most of the subjects were from the state of Rio de Janeiro, where Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is responsible for almost all cases 11 .…”

“…Due to high cost and technical complexity of tests, culture parasite and molecular detection of Leishmania in Brazil are restricted to the reference centers for this disease 5,13 . The Montenegro skin test (MST), with a sensitivity rate of 86.4% up to 100% 6,15,23,29 , is the main diagnostic test in primary care. In the presence of a suspicious cutaneous lesion, MST supports the diagnosis of Leishmania infection.…”

“…The scarcity or lack of knowledge in the literature on probable factors associated with ACL demonstrates the importance of complementary studies. Few investigations have addressed risk factors [6] , [7] , such as the distance of residences from forest area, and fewer still have addressed bodies of water, domesticated animals, vegetation and housing conditions as risk factors for the disease [8] , [9] . In the state of Paraná, studies have reported ACL infection in dogs [10] [15] , equines [16] and wild animals [17] .…”

“…Despite this restriction, the evaluation was efficient because these villages are located in areas very favorable to ACL. The presence of banana plants and other fruit trees was also described in the peridomiciles of patients in several municipalities of the ACL endemic region of RJ (BUSTAMANTE et al, 2009). In addition, the abundance of L. intermedia was related to the cultivation of banana trees in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State (LEMOS; LIMA, 2005).…”
