Environmental scanning, strategic behaviour, organizational characteristics, and performance in small firms

This analysis determined the effect of environmental scanning on organizational performance, a case study of commercial based parastatals in Nairobi County, Kenya. This study adopted descriptive research design and targeted 129 employees of commercial based parastatals in Nairobi County, Kenya. The study was carried out through a census; a questionnaire was used in data collection. Quantitative approaches were used for data analysis whereby Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 23.0) was used to run descriptive and inferential statistics. The result indicated that collectively environmental scanning has positive influence on organization performance. The study concluded that predictor variable influence organization performance. The findings were expected to be of value to the management and decision makers to form a basis for improving implementation of strategies. The study recommended that during strategy formulation the commercial based parastatals should involve all stakeholders in the industry so as to create sense of ownership. Furthermore, studies can be done to other variables which influence implementation of strategic plans but were not considered in this study or the same variables to different populations, locations and other sectors of economy in Kenya.

Influence of Environmental Scanning on the Organizational Performance of Tourism Statutory Bodies in Zambia

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of environmental scanning on the organizational performance of tourism statutory bodies in Zambia. The study was guided by systems theory. The study was conducted using descriptive research design. The target population for the study was 160 top and middlelevel managers in five statutory bodies in Zambia. Sampling was probabilistic through Taro Yamane's formula to arrive at a sample of 114 respondents, while data was primarily collected through online questionnaires sent to the email and Whats App platforms of targeted respondents. The analysis was both descriptive and inferential analysis. Descriptive analysis was done through standard deviation, mean, frequency, and percentages. Furthermore, the inferential analysis was carried out through correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results of the study were presented on tables and figures with narrative for interpretations. The study findings revealed that performance of tourism statutory bodies in Zambia was significantly related with environmental scanning. Environmental scanning had positive influence on performance. The implication of these findings is that in today's turbulent environment, it is more desirable for organizations to conduct environmental scanning activities systematically and regularly. The study recommended that tourism statutory bodies in Zambia should institute an operational office specifically dedicated to strategic execution processes. There is need for more literature review to expose further empirical evidence on this important subject of environmental scanning and its interaction with aspects of organization performance especially social performance. It was recommended that researchers mount studies on this relationship. Top managers should find out how environmental scanning generates strategic management practices to increase organizational performance of tourism statutory bodies in Zambia

Effect of Strategic Planning Practices on Performance of State Corporations in Kenya: A Case of Agricultural Finance Corporation

Strategic planning practices enables an organization to perform relatively well in regards to competition in the industry. Agricultural Finance Cooperation like any other state corporation is faced by numerous challenges in regards to strategic planning as well strategy implementation which adversely affect their service delivery. This study sought to analyze the effect of strategic planning practices on performance of state corporations a case of Agricultural Finance Corporation. The study focused on strategic planning practices such as stakeholders' involvement, top management support and environmental scanning and how they affect the performance of Agricultural Finance Cooperation (AFC). The study adopted an explanatory research design and targeted 157 employees who were drawn from top and middle level management using census. Data was collected using structured questionnaires which were self-administered. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were tested after piloting 16 questionnaires at Agricultural Development Corporation. Inferential and descriptive statistical data was analyzed using SPSS version 24 software. Result of multiple regressions revealed that strategic planning practices jointly and independently influenced performance of Agricultural Finance Corporation. Jointly the four constructs namely stakeholders' involvement, top management support and environmental scanning contributed 65.1% of the variation in performance of Agricultural Finance Corporation. The study constructs were also positively and significantly related to performance of AFC and this led to the rejection of the null hypothesis. This implied that the management of AFC and as well as other state corporations should pay high premiums in strategically formulating and implementing strategic practices through policies which can enhance their performance. In this regard AFC as well as other private or public institutions should formulate policies which strengthen their strategic planning practices to achieve high performance.
