Major objective of this study was to appraise the variation of antioxidant activity, total phenols, total flavonoids and individual phenolic acids among fruit peels from five species of Citrus namely C. sinensis 'Valancia' (Mausami), C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine' (Red blood), C. reticulata (Kinnow), C. reticulata Blanco 'Merisol' (Fruiter), and C. paradisi 'Macfadyen' (Grapefruit) as function of extraction solvents. The extract yield from the fruit peels of the selected Citrus species by using four solvents varied significantly (p<0.05) 17.56-49.13 g/100g in relation to the extraction media and type of peel. The highest extraction yield was obtained with 100% methanol from Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine') peel while the least with 100% ethanol from Fruiter (C. reticulata Blanco 'Merisol') peel. The total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC 50 ) and reducing power [FRAP (EC 50 )] for peel extracts ranged from 13.69 to 66.10 GAE mg/g of dry weight (DW), 9.34 to 28.99 CE mg/g DW, 0.33 to 2.32 mg/mL and 2.05 to 6.76 mg/mL, respectively. According to HPLC analysis of peel extracts, gallic acid and protocatechuic acid with contribution 11.96-96.08 and 109.18-578.59mg/kg of extract, respectively, were detected to be the main phenolic acids among others. Total amount of individual phenolic acids (TPAs) in the tested peels varied over 18.37 to 1015.99 mg/kg of extract. The highest amount of TPAs was extracted in Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine') with 80% methanol while the least in Grapefruit (C. paradisi 'Macfadyen') with 100% methanol. It can be concluded from the present data that both the species and extraction solvents have notable effect on the antioxidant attributes and phenolics of citrus peels. Overall, the results of this study showed that extracts from peel of Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine'), among others, possessed superior antioxidant activity and greater amount of phenolic acids.

Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate antimicrobial, antiradical and insecticidal potential of leaf and fruit of Gardenia gummifera L. f. (Rubiaceae). Methods:The leaf and fruits were shade dried, powdered and extracted by maceration process using methanol. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria by Agar well diffusion assay. Antifungal activity was determined against six seed-borne fungi by Poisoned food technique. Antiradical activity of leaf and fruit extracts was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonate (ABTS) radical scavenging assays. Insecticidal activity of leaf and fruit extracts, in terms of larvicidal and pupicidal activity, was assessed against larvae and pupae of Aedes aegypti. Results:Both the extracts inhibited all test bacteria. Marked antibacterial activity was displayed by fruit extract when compared to leaf extract. S. epidermidis and E. coli were inhibited to highest and least extent by both extracts respectively. Fruit extract was found to exhibit higher antifungal effect when compared to leaf extract. Leaf extract and fruit extract exhibited highest inhibitory activity against A. niger and A. flavus respectively. Leaf and fruit extracts scavenged DPPH radical's dose dependently with an IC50 value of 49.01µg/ml and 2.53µg/ml respectively. The scavenging of ABTS by leaf and fruit extracts was dose dependent and the IC50 Conclusion: Overall, fruit extract of G. gummifera exhibited marked antimicrobial, antiradical and insecticidal activity when compared to leaf extract. The plant can be used for developing agents/formulations effective against infectious microorganisms, oxidative stress and insect vectors that transmit dreadful diseases. The observed bioactivities could be ascribed to the presence of active principles which are to be isolated and characterized.value for leaf and fruit extract was 2.58µg/ml and 2.31µg/ml respectively. Fruit extract was shown to exhibit marked antiradical activity when compared to leaf extract. Leaf and fruit extracts exhibited dose dependent insecticidal activity in terms of larvicidal and pupicidal activity and the susceptibility of larvae and pupae to extracts was in the order II instar larvae>IV instar larvae>pupae. Fruit extract displayed marked insecticidal potential when compared to leaf extract.

A series of spiro-[indoline-3,3 0 -pyrrolizin/pyrrolidin]-2-ones, 4, 5 and 6 were synthesized in a sequential manner from Cu-TEMPO catalyzed dehydrogenation of alkylated ketones, 1 followed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides via decarboxylative condensation of isatin, 2 and L-proline/sarcosine, 3 in high regioselectivities and yields. The detailed mechanistic studies were performed to identify the reaction intermediates, which revealed that the reaction proceeds via dehydrogenative cycloaddition.Additionally, the regio and stereochemistry of the synthesized derivatives were affirmed by 2D NMR spectroscopic studies.
