Estimation of phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of some selected traditional Indian medicinal plants

Abstract: The powder samples and methanol extract of 11 medicinal plants were subjected to analysis of proximate composition and measurement of antioxidant activity. Different parameters studied include phenolic contents, moisture, ash, crude fiber, fats and waxes. The assays employed were ferric reducing antioxidant power, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity and scavenging effect on the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical. Results obtained indicate that the antioxidant potential varied significantly from plan… Show more

“…Epidemiological studies reveal that consumption of fruits and vegetables, due to their rich profile of antioxidant nutrients, is positively linked with the decreased incidence of cancer, ageing, inflammation and cardiovascular disorders 9,10 . Citrus fruits including oranges, mandarins, limes, lemons, sour oranges, and Grapefruits are popular throughout the world due to their refreshing juices, nutritive value and health benefits [11][12][13] . Citrus [Rutaceae family] containing 17 species and 52 varieties 14 are the world's largest fruits commodity 15 with estimated annual production of 80 million tons 16 .…”

“…Substances with electronic donating potential (antioxidant species) will reduce the blue-green colored radical solution to colorless neutral form which is shown by the suppression of characteristic long wavelength absorption spectrum. The method of scavenging of ABTS radicals has been extensively used to evaluate radical scavenging nature of plant extracts [24,52,58,61,62,65,66]. In the present study, we evaluated radical scavenging nature of leaf and fruit extract of G. gummifera by ABTS assay and the result is shown in fig.…”

“…ABTS assay was performed according to Rajurkar & Hande. 74 ABTS radical prepared was incubated with different concentrations of compounds in the dark for 15 minutes at 37 C, and the absorbance was noted at 734 nm. The blank was run parallel in the same manner.…”

“…here A c denotes the absorbance of the control reaction (containing all reagents except the sample), and A s denotes the absorbance of the test sample. 74 4.4.2 DPPH scavenging activity. The free radical scavenging activity at various concentrations (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 mg mL À1 ) of compounds was evaluated by DPPH assay (Nikhat et al, 2009).…”
