Functional vision barriers: A new concept analyzed in terms of human visual performance.

Abstract: In this work we introduce a new category of barriers that we call "functional vision barriers." This expression refers to lighting and visual elements that may complicate or hinder functional vision and may make life even more difficult for people with visual defects. These barriers appear as a consequence of certain negative effects caused by the poor design of the visual stimulus or visual environment that surrounds it in which lighting is one of the main factors. We use the term "functional vision" because … Show more

“…Los obstáculos físicos que se encuentran en el entorno urbano se han abordado tradicionalmente en el entrenamiento para personas con discapacidad visual (Nau et al, 2014). Sin embargo, recientemente, se añaden elementos que hemos incluido en nuestra escala, como los relacionados con la iluminación (Colombo et al, 2013) y que justifican la conservación de un ítem débil desde un punto de vista psicométrico.…”

“…Researchers have previously used different techniques to simulate light rays in an eye with a cataract on the lens. Some have studied image formation in an eye model using special glass plates with various fixed degrees of scattering [25][26][27]. This technique makes it very easy to alter the size and density of the scattering.…”

“…1 Recently, a new category of barriers was proposed called 'functional vision barriers' referring to poor lighting design and visual elements -stimuli and surrounds -that may complicate or hinder functional vision. 2 A complementary concept was introduced in another paper 3 'the visual accessibility of a space' referring to the effectiveness with which vision can be used to travel safely through a space. Sagawa 4 introduced the concept of 'accessible design' to address the needs of people with special requirements, such as older people and people with disabilities, in the fields of light and lighting.…”
