Abstract: Intra-lysosomal accumulation of the autofluorescent “residue” known as lipofuscin, which is found within postmitotic cells, remains controversial. Although it was considered a harmless hallmark of aging, its presence is detrimental as it continually accumulates. The latest evidence highlighted that lipofuscin strongly correlates with the excessive production of reactive oxygen species; however, despite this, lipofuscin cannot be removed by the biological recycling mechanisms. The antagonistic effects exerted a… Show more

“…Senescence promotes tissue remodeling and may contribute to the decline in functions that take place during aging [ 4 ]. Lipofuscin is fluorescent material considered the “age pigment” and a marker of senescent cells which increases with age in various tissues, including the ovary [ 5 , 6 ]. The lipids represent an essential component of lipofuscin formation (20–50%) whereas oxidized proteins represent about 30–70% and about 2% of metals [ 5 , 7 ].…”

“…Lipofuscin is an important marker of aging within cells (LI et al, 2021). It constantly accumulates and is intensely related to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ILIE et al, 2020). Our results showed that there was a reduction of this marker after exposure to ozone therapy.…”
