The Effects of UV Light on the Chemical and Mechanical Properties of a Transparent Epoxy-Diamine System in the Presence of an Organic UV Absorber

Abstract: Despite several excellent properties including low shrinkage, good chemical resistance, curable at low temperatures and the absence of byproducts or volatiles, epoxy resins are susceptible to ultra violet (UV) damage and their durability is reduced substantially when exposed to outdoor environments. To overcome this drawback, UV absorbers have been usually used to decrease the rate of UV degradation. In this present study, the effects of UV light on the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of cured epo… Show more

“…These may also be associated with the deformation of the polymer below its Tg or a change in flexibility of polymer chains arising from chain scission [23] or UV irradiation [24]. Wear tracks on PEEK discs formed by PEEK-sapphire and PEEK-steel contacts are shown in Figure 5.…”

“…Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can be used to provide less distorted, clear, and highresolution images of the particles in materials, and is a useful technique for investigating the variation of the surface, particle size and shape, homogeneity, and cross sections within the blends [49][50][51][52]. The surface morphology of the PVC films was examined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).…”

“…The action of these additives against the UV weathering is different: in details, the inorganic particles behave by scattering the light; on the contrary, the organic UV absorbers convert UV light into heat and higher wavelengths, while radical interceptors (Hals) capture the free radicals of the starting polymeric decomposition and prevent to this process from continuing. The organic UV absorbers seem to be more efficient compared than the inorganic particles yet their durability is poor due to evaporation and migration from the surface [15].In the attempt to increase the waterproofness and the puncture resistance of a commercial technical polyester-based (PET) woven fabric for possible use in semi-rigid luggage production, this work studied the application of waterborne polyurethane dispersions to the fabric surface through the impregnation method. This technique was preferred to coating-the most common approach-in order to act as reinforcement and protection of the fabric weaving without covering the surface and altering the textile appearance.…”
