Abstract: The genus Aegilops contains a diverse collection of wild species exhibiting variation in geographical distribution, ecological adaptation, ploidy and genome organization. Aegilops is the most closely related genus to Triticum which includes cultivated wheat, a globally important crop that has a limited gene pool for modern breeding. Aegilops species are a potential future resource for wheat breeding for traits, such as adaptation to different ecological conditions and pest and disease resistance. This study de… Show more

“…In Poaceae, various molecular markers have been developed (Liu et al, 2012; Hammami et al, 2014; Gao, Jia & Kong, 2016). For example, traits in important species of Poaceae (i.e., bamboo, and wheat) can be traced using the SNP markers (Jiang, Zhang & Ding, 2013; Hu et al, 2015; Przewieslik-Allen et al, 2019). Besides that, plastid data were used for species discrimination of Stipa (Krawczyk et al, 2018).…”

“…Natural hybridization is defined as the intercross of individuals from two different species or populations of the same species, while introgression or introgressive hybridization describes the incorporation of alleles from one population into another via hybridization followed by continuous backcrossing (Harrison and Larson 2014). New subspecies formation in the Triticum-Aegilops alliance occurs frequently by polyploidization as well as intra-and inter-introgression via hybridization, leading to a rapid burst of diversification (Bernhardt et al 2020;Keidar-Friedman et al 2018;Przewieslik-Allen et al 2019). For example, the speciation of bread wheat is a result of two successive rounds polyploidization (Fig.…”

“…The Axiom® 35K breeders array has 1962 varieties genotyped along with 460 individuals from 23 mapping populations. There are also genotyping data for the 36 711 SNPs included on the Axiom® Wheat-Relative Genotyping array ( 14 ), based on data from screening 10 wild relative species ( Aegilops mutica , A. speltoides , A. tauschii , T. timopheevii , T. urartu , Secale cereale , Thinopyrum bessarabicum , T. elongatum , T. intermedium and T. ponticum ). The wheat-relative array was used to produce genotyping results for 278 wheat relative and progenitor species, which are held in CerealsDB.…”
