Reducing Behavior Problems Through Functional Communication Training

Abstract: It is generally agreed that serious misbehavior in children should be replaced with socially appropriate behaviors, but few guidelines exist with respect to choosing replacement behaviors. We address this issue in two experiments. In Experiment 1, we developed an assessment method for identifying situations in which behavior problems, induding aggression, tantrums, and self-injury, were most likely to occur. Results demonstrated that both low level of adult attention and high level of task difficulty were disc… Show more

“…Participant behaviour was coded from video recordings made during an experimental analogue situation (similar to those described by Carr and Durand, 1985). As previous literature had indicated that social anxiety behaviours were most prevalent during periods of conversation with researchers, 7 participants were observed during high attention conditions of the analogue situation Lesniak-Karpiak et al, 2003).…”

“…However, the researchers deemed the antecedent intervention as more socially acceptable for long-term use in the workplace. Fisher et al (2000) implemented functional communication training (FCT), a type of DRA in which the alternative behavior is specifically a communicative behavior (Carr and Durand 1985). The 19-year-old male with autism and profound intellectual disability's ISB was found to be sensitive to tangible reinforcement; therefore, FCT involved providing a picture card communication system to allow for appropriate requests for preferred items.…”
