Gastroprotective activity of the hydroethanolic extract and ethyl acetate fraction from Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers.

Abstract: Peptic ulcers are an important pathology, and the search for safer and more effective treatment methods is of paramount importance. In this study, we assess the gastroprotective effects of the hydroethanolic extract (HE) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) from Kalanchoe pinnata leaves against an ethanol/HCl-induced ulcer model in rats. The HE reduced gastric lesions by approximately 47% (400 mg/kg). A significant inhibition of the gastric lesions by 50% was observed after pretreatment with the EAF (200 mg/kg). Q… Show more

“…Our results show preclinical evidence of the effect of these extracts as gastroprotectors. Previous studies reported in literature (using different extraction method) have demonstrated that the K. pinnata species presents gastroprotective activity [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ] as well as only one study reported the gastroprotective activity of K. brasiliensis [ 45 ]. It is worth noting that when comparing our study with others described previously, we used an extraction method to obtain the leaf juices according to popular medicine without the use of toxic solvent.…”

“…Interestingly, previous studies had shown that the increase of compound 1, caused by the different conditions, can be related to the improvement of the effects, as antioxidant properties (Nascimento et al, 2013). Other activities of compound 1 were also been discussed (Muzitano et al, 2006;Sobreira et al, 2017).…”

“…Em relação à fração acetato de etila, alguns ensaios, já foram realizados pelo nosso grupo durante o mestrado. Foram isolados e identificados dois flavonoides glicosilados desta fração, quercitrina (5) e quercetina 3-O-α-L-arabinopiranosil (1→2) α-Lramnopiranosídeo (3), previamente isolados em folhas, por Ichikawa (1986), Muzitano et al, 2006a;Muzitano et al, 2006b) e Sobreira et al, (2017).…”
