Risk management during construction of electric power substations

The construction of electric power substations poses a great number of risks due to its dangerous environment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the perception of construction workers on risks, methods they use for evaluation and managing risks to which they are exposed. This study carried out a qualitative and quantitative analysis during the expansion of one electric substation, adding an additional 100 MVA power transformer. The risks were identified and analysed by using the Preliminary Risk Analysis (PRA). Additionally, a questionnaire on construction safety was created and applied on all 27 workers which participated in the construction. The results showed which activities are present during the construction of a power substation, which risks are involved and how to manage them. It was found that among several, the PRA and Checklists were the most commonly used analysis tools. Further on, it was found a relation between training and risk perception. Among perceived risks were: noise, working at heights, electric shocks, traffic accidents, poisonous animals, dust, fire and explosions. The conclusion of this study was that the construction of electric power substations brings several safety risks and that the instruction of workers allows an effective risk management, and can reduce the number of accidents in this type of working activity.

Water conservation practices are necessary for buildings because water scarcity increasing. This survey is a study of patents, which analyzed the technological innovations with water saving purpose in the following appliances: toilet, shower and tap. The records were collected in the INPI (Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial) database by searching for the name of the appliance in the title of the patent. Then, the patents deposited in the period from 2010 to 2017 were selected, which had a water saving purpose described in the abstract or patent document, these were classified in rational water use solutions and use of alternative sources. In total, 2,616 patents were registered between 1974 and 2017. However, the results show that in the last seven years there has been a considerable decline in the record of patents for the studied appliances. In the period from 2010 to 2017, 100 patents were found with water saving purpose, of which 79% are rational water use solutions, such as the use of timers, presence sensors, pressure reduction and systems for the use of wasted water before reaching ideal bath temperature. On the other hand, 21% of the solutions were from alternative sources, most of which refer to the reuse of the shower and tap water in the toilet flush. Therefore, this study contributes to the understanding of advances in technological innovation in the field of water conservation.

At present, it is striking that a large percentage of occupational accidents in the construction sector are still caused by falls from height. Therefore, curbing the severe personal, social and economic consequences of these events is not only a commitment but an obligation for all stakeholders in the construction sector. After a review of current fall protection systems on construction sites, the purpose of this study is to establish the preliminary requirements for the design, development and prototyping of a new system which can be used as an auxiliary means to prevent occupational accidents in the construction sector caused by fall hazards at height. Based on the design science research (DSR) methodology, this paper tests the capability of alternative materials (metals, plastics and composites) to withstand the loads required by the regulatory standard UNE-EN 13374:2013 + A1:2019 and looks at the improvements they can offer. The results obtained enable new metals and composite materials to be put forward, based on their suitability to the parameters of the risks of falling from height, ensuring that the greatest number of potential situations are addressed. Then, the needs to be satisfied and requirements to be met are listed, prioritised and considered for new temporary edge protection systems (TEPS). Next, the attributes that increase user satisfaction and/or reduce user dissatisfaction are filtered by means of a Kano model, which is applied thanks to the responses of construction designers, coordinators and supervisors. Once these questions are solved, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is performed by a focus group, weighing the Kano contributions and ranking the materials to be selected for the preliminary design of innovative TEPS for construction works. After considering safety, ergonomics, adaptability, sustainability, efficiency, manufacturability and flexibility criteria, the basis for the design of a new temporary edge protection system is established.
