New training model using chickens intestine for pediatric intestinal anastomosis

Abstract: Purpose:To develop a new low-cost, easy-to-make and available training model using chickens’ intestine for infant intestinal anastomosis. Methods:Segments of chicken intestine were used to create an intestinal anastomosis simulator. We tried to perform an end-to-end, end-to-side and side-to-side anastomosis. Handsewn sutured anastomosis were performed in single layered with interrupted prolene 5-0 suture. The parameters analyzed were cost, intestine's diameter and length, anastomosis patency and flow-through an… Show more

“…12,14 This challenge is appropriate for a large learning curve that requires a gradual transition from macrodissection to vascular microdissection, which is important in refining the surgeon's technique to precisely perform microanastomosis. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Using the interlobular arteries and its branches (diameter letter than 1 mm), it is possible to training supermicrosurgery. However, we did not test the new model is this scenario due to lack of material.…”

“…3,4 In addition, vascular dissection may be useful for training surgeons performing vascular access and arteriovenous fistula creation. 10,21 Comparing to others nonliving training model such as chicken parts, 13,15,22,23 human placenta 12 and fresh cadaveric' vessels, 24 the kidney's pork is cheap, normally is not used for human consumption and don't have risk of viral transmission. Moreover, some papers describe loss of material due to not having vessels in the right conditions, a fact that was not observed in this study, and the length of usable vessels for dissection and performed anastomosis are one of the biggest.…”

“…Several education models, such as simulation (dry-laboratory) models, or animal models, for intestinal or vascular anastomosis have already been developed [ 1 4 5 6 ]. Recently, several education models for PJ anastomosis using biotissue models or animal models have been introduced and reported [ 7 8 9 10 11 ].…”
