Tissue engineering promotes tissue regeneration through biomaterials that have excellent properties and have the potential to replace tissues. Many studies show that bacterial cellulose (BC) might ensure tissue regeneration and substitution, being used for the bioengineering of hard, cartilaginous and soft tissues. Bacterial cellulose is extensively used as wound dressing material and results show that BC is a promising tissue scaffold (bone, cardiovascular, urinary tissue). It can be combined with polymeric and non-polymeric compounds to acquire antimicrobial, cell-adhesion and proliferation properties. To ensure proper tissue regeneration, the material has to be: biocompatible, with minimum tissue reaction and biodegradability; bio-absorbable, to promote tissue development, cellular interaction and grow; resistant to support the weight of the newly formed tissue. Its versatile structure, physical and biochemical properties can be adjusted by adapting the bacteria culturing conditions. The main biomedical applications seem to be as hard (bone, dental), fibrocartilaginous (meniscal) and soft tissue (skin, cardiovascular, urinary) substituents. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge, challenges and future applications of BC and its biomedical potential in veterinary medicine. It was focused on the main uses in regeneration and scaffold tissue replacement and, although BC showed promising results, there is a lack of successful results of BC use in clinical practice. Most studies were performed only at experimental level and further research is needed for BC to enter clinical veterinary practice.

Fistula-in-ano (FIA, anal fistula) treatment remains a surgical challenge for coloproctologists. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a new frontier in the treatment of FIA. In this study, we established a FIA model of Japanese rabbit and evaluated the effect of four treatments on fistula healing: ADSC transplantation, acellular small intestinal submucosa (ASIS), noncutting seton, and PBS as negative control. High-throughput RNA sequencing was also performed to investigate the anal tissue (normal and ADSC treatment group) expression profile of mRNA. Our data showed that ADSC treatment had the shortest time to promote fistula healing compared to the other treatments, and fistula filled with new adipose tissue and muscle cells without scar. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of RNA-seq data showed that the differential genes are enriched in system development and animal organ development. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that ADSCs rapidly promote fistula healing through differentiation, a promising stem cell therapy for FIA. The rabbit is an effective animal model for evaluating FIA therapeutic options.

The sharp increase in the use of cellulose seems to be in increasing demand in wood; much more research related to sustainable or alternative materials is necessary as a lot of the arable land and natural resources use is unsustainable. In accordance, attention has focused on bacterial cellulose as a new functional material. It possesses a three-dimensional, gelatinous structure consisting of cellulose with mechanical and thermal properties. Moreover, while a plant-originated cellulose is composed of cellulose, hemi-cellulose, and lignin, bacterial cellulose attributable to the composition of a pure cellulose nanofiber mesh spun is not necessary in the elimination of other components. Moreover, due to its hydrophilic nature caused by binding water, consequently being a hydrogel as well as biocompatibility, it has only not only used in medical fields including artificial skin, cartilage, vessel, and wound dressing, but also in delivery; some products have even been commercialized. In addition, it is widely used in various technologies including food, paper, textile, electronic and electrical applications, and is being considered as a highly versatile green material with tremendous potential. However, many efforts have been conducted for the evolution of novel and sophisticated materials with environmental affinity, which accompany the empowerment and enhancement of specific properties. In this review article, we summarized only industry and research status regarding BC and contemplated its potential in the use of BC.

Abstract: The absence of extrusion, stenosis or urinary fistula after 14 weeks of urethrovesical anastomosis demonstrates cellulosic exopolysaccharide membrane biocompatibility and biointegration with tendency to a thicker wall.
