Comparative study of Polypropylene versus Parietex composite®, Vicryl® and Ultrapro® meshes, regarding the formation of intraperitoneal adhesions

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the polypropylene mesh (Marlex®) to Vicryl®, Parietex composite® and Ultrapro® meshes to assess the occurrence of adhesions in the intraperitoneal implantation. Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were allocated into three groups: PP+V, in which all the animals received a polypropylene and a Vicryl® mesh; PP+PC, with the implantation of polypropylene and Parietex composite® meshes and PP+UP, in which there was implantation of polypropylene and Ultrapro®. Macroscopic analysis was performed 28 days la… Show more

“…The other 63 articles were not summarized because an identical comparison of two meshes of different types was barely found in these articles. Four articles were pooled into meta-analysis for the comparison of PP mesh and HA/CMC mesh [18][19][20][21], and five articles for the comparison of PP mesh and PC mesh [22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…The lack of and "ideal" mesh lead to the development of a series of composed meshes, mixing different types of materials [1][2][3][4] . The main advantage of the composed meshes it is the possibility of intraperitoneal placement, with minimal adhesion formation.…”

“…Regardless of the large spectrum of brand options available, almost all manufacturers still use the same three basic materials -polypropylene, polyester or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). These materials are used in combination one with another or with a variety of different materials, such as titanium, omega 3, monocryl, polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF) and hyaluronate [2][3][4] .…”
