Effect of atenolol pre-treatment in heart damage in a model of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion

Abstract: 1 AbstractPurpose: To investigate the effects of atenolol in inflammatory mediator and oxidative stress in a myocardial injury by intestinal ischemia/reperfusion in rat model. Methods: Adult Wistar male rats were randomly (n=8), anesthetized and divided in: Sham: submitted to operation only; group SS+IR: intravenous saline infusion following superior mesenteric artery occlusion during 60 minutes (ischemia) and open for 120 minutes (reperfusion); group AT+IR: intravenous atenolol infusion (2 mg/kg) following su… Show more

“…[ 12 ] used this classification to show the efficiency of diltiazem plus SOD on IRI [ 12 ] . In another study, Okada et al investigated the protective effect of atenolol on myocardial cells in regard to the histopathological classification abovementioned [ 13 ] . In the present study, we found significantly less histopathological damage in Wistar rats’ myocytes when cilostazol was used ( Figures 1 and 2 ).…”

“…The bowel is sensitive to ischemia because of its high metabolic activity 19 ; resulting in worsening of wound healing after anastomoses 5.7 , increased fistulas tax, and difficulty in adequate nutrients’ absorption, causing malnutrition, anemia and diarrhea. It is one of the main sources of bacteria causing sepsis, which happens with the breakdown of the intestinal barrier allowing wide bacterial translocation 17 .…”

“…Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, seen after various surgical and clinical situations, such as thoracoabdominal aortic surgery, liver transplantation, intestinal transplantation, strangulated hernias, acute mesenteric ischemia, shock, trauma, and neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis, is an important clinical problem that causes approximately 50-80% of all deaths in surgical intensive care units after major traumas. [1,2] The small intestine is one of the most ischemia-sensitive organs. [3,4] Occlusion of the infrarenal abdominal aorta may also cause ischemic injury, and cell and tissue damage may also occur in remote organs due to complex mechanisms involv-caspase-3 activation, an irreversible terminal event in the activation of apoptosis.…”
