How does practice improve the skills of medical students during consecutive training courses?

Abstract: Purpose: To follow-up the development of medical students in taking a stitch using two different bench models, and to assess their performance with regards to gender, handedness, prior recreational activities and interest in surgery. Methods: The study was performed during the compulsory basic (n=152) and the consecutive elective course (n=27). Students took simple interrupted stitches into synthetic and biopreprate models in the classroom and in the operating room. The time needed for that was measured and th… Show more

“…Suturing and knot tying are essential components of surgery, and thus should necessitate training early in medical education. Like previous studies this study showed increased proficiency in surgical skills after implementation of a training system [3][4][5][6][7][8]. The time needed to perform knot tying and suturing decreased by more than half, and the quality of the aforementioned skills increased from zero to an almost perfect score.…”

“…Los ítems mencionados, por lo demás, obtuvieron la mayor progresión absoluta al finalizar la intervención en ambos grupos comparados (Figura 2). todología 25 y han descrito que la retroalimentación objetiva sumado a una evaluación certera son los factores con mayor influencia en el aprendizaje de habilidades motoras 26,27 , destacando el rol de un par entrenado como un agente activo que identifique y solucione errores en el aprendizaje.…”

“…Our results allows us to infer that, from the medical students’ point of view, there is an insufficiency of new alternative models for the training of surgical skills, and, therefore, points to the need of their development. Current studies indicate that cheap and viable alternatives to traditional teaching methods should always be sought 2 , 6 , 7 . Many of these studies have been developed to present alternative models for the practice of surgical techniques, mainly aimed at suture training, since, following the expectation, the demand for these models should increase 6 .…”

“…Historically, teaching of the operative technique assumed different perspectives, according to the availability of resources and with the scientific and behavioral human advances. It is worth to point that, regardless of the type of resource used, the development and the constant execution of surgical skills are fundamental for acquisition of skills during medical graduation 1 , 2 .…”
