Geographic stomatitis with palate involvement

Abstract: Benign migratory glossitis or geographic tongue is a benign condition that usually manifests as asymptomatic erythematous and migratory circinate patches, involving the lateral and dorsal aspects of the tongue. Extra-lingual lesions uncommonly occur and are mainly located on labial and buccal mucosae, lips and floor of the mouth. The present report describes one patient with a geographic lesion on the hard palate associated with lingual lesions and another patient who had multiple geographic lesions both in th… Show more

“…Parasites not only steal our nutrients and lead to malnutrition but they can also modulate immune response in our body by secreting and excreting various biochemical substances which will alter the response of our immune mechanisms. Parasites are known to precipitate or aggravate various diseases like allergy, reactive arthritis etc., they may also have a role in psoriasis in genetically susceptible 1,5,6 individuals as polygenic inheritance model is also proposed . In our study also history of geographic tongue was present among 2 patients (9%) in rst degree relatives.…”

“…MS mainly affects the labial and buccal mucosa, but any site can be involved. [ 6 ] Campana et al ,[ 7 ] found a large number of reports with palatal involvement – nearly 30%. There is also a frequent association of BMG with fissured tongue,[ 3 ] as occurred in our case.…”

“…MS is a much rarer occurrence although it is possible for misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis to take place. Campana et al [ 7 ] identified only 64 cases of MS reported in the literature, 24 without association with BMG, in addition to two further reports with palatal involvement.…”

“…There are different names for BMG including geographic tongue, geographic stomatitis, and erythema migrans. Whichever term chosen, most important is that BMG is not a real pathology, but, rather, a common idiopathic condition that affects 1–3% of the population worldwide [2, 4, 5]. The lesion is typical on the tongue, showing a characteristic of erythematous circinate patches with depapillation of the filiform papillae (the fusiform papilla remains unchanged) surrounded by slightly raised yellowish stria.…”

“…To support this diagnosis, these findings stood out: (1) the lesion’s clinical aspect, i.e., the presence of circinate erythematous patches surrounded by a discrete yellowish stria, (2) the disappearance of the lesion in a short period of time, which is a typical characteristic of this condition, and (3) the presence of fissured tongue (Fig. 2), a finding also commonly seen in combination with BMG in nearly 50% of cases [2, 3].…”
