Abstract: Epstein-Barr virus is a DNA virus infecting human beings and could affect 90% of human population. It is crucial to take in account that in Latin America, unlike what happens in developed countries, the exposure to the virus is very early and therefore people have a much longer interaction with the virus. The virus is related to many diseases, mainly the oncological ones, and when the onset is in cutaneous tissue, it can present many clinical variants, as well acute as chronic ones. Among the acute ones are in… Show more

“…The skin eruption most frequently reported during EBVIM is a maculopapular exanthem occurring in patients treated with ampicillin/amoxicillin 3 and less frequently with other beta‐lactam antibiotics 24 . Indeed, 70–100% of IM patients improperly treated with ampicillin show, after a few days, a pruritic and prolonged diffuse maculopapular exanthem frequently involving also the palms and soles and associated with systemic symptoms such as arthralgias, angioedema, and gastrointestinal symptoms 1,3,4,31,32,46 . Patients with EBVIM who experience drug reactions to beta‐lactams are not really allergic to these medications, and skin tests and future adverse reactions to the same drugs are not predictable.…”

“…9 Also, EBV primary infection in children is mainly undistinguishable from other viral diseases and some patients develop non -painful growth of lymph tissue. 10 However, researchers still try to know why EBV causes mild or even no signs in most infected individuals but in the other hand, it is linked to cancer in others. 11 Stress, 12 age of individual catching infection with EBV, genetic susceptibility , factors of the environment and presence of other pathogens effect on development and type of symptoms.…”

“…They have important role in the control of EBV infected cells. 10 EBV codes a cytokine and a cytokine receptor which are very important for modulating the immune system for allowing the persistent infection. BCRF1 protein of EBV is a homologue for the host interleukin 10 (IL-10) for allowing the viral persistence leading to inhibition of interferon gamma synthesis 13 in addition to stimulation of mast cells proliferation and inhibition of macrophage inflammatory chemokine production.…”

“…Worldwide, more than 90 % of individuals are affected by EBV (Dowd et al, 2013), and latent CMV infection affects 50-65 % of adults in Europe (Docke et al, 2003). Once the immune system is compromised by inflammation or immunosuppression, the viruses can be awaked from latency and cause EBV related lymphoproliferative disorders and malignancies (Andrei et al, 2019, Sangueza-Acosta andSandoval-Romero, 2018) or active CMV infection such as pneumonia, ulcers and fever (Cook, 2007), respectively. But interestingly, also subclinical reactivation of latent infection has implications for general inflammatory processes.…”
