Pigmented squamous cell carcinoma: case report and importance of differential diagnosis

Abstract: A few cases of pigmented squamous cell carcinoma affecting the skin and the ocular and oral mucosa of the elderly have been described in the literature. The disease manifests itself as papular and nodular erythematous or pigmented lesions. The main clinical differential diagnoses are pigmented basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Histopathological examination is characterized by proliferation of atypical squamous cells with formation of horn pearls permeated by dendritic melanocytes. For this reason, a careful d… Show more

“…SCCs in Black individuals are often superficial, discrete, hard lesions arising from an indurated, rounded, elevated base [31,32]. The dermoscopic features observed in our images were similar to those described in white individuals, but there was a higher incidence of pigmented variants [8,10,31,33]. We observed a similar "halo" pattern as was described for plantar ALMs, but a larger study is needed to validate the predictive importance of this result.…”

“…Regarding squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), UVR exposure is the most common risk factor for the development of SCC in those with fair skin, but trauma and inflammatory processes predominate the pathogenesis in Black populations, a trend also observed in our population [1,2,[31][32][33].…”

“…There is a loss of the granular layer and overlying parakeratosis that often spares the adnexal ostial epithelium. 9 Clonal formation can occur as well as increased pigment production. In comparison, bland keratinocytes are seen in MA.…”
