Characterization of sporotrichosis cases treated in a dermatologic teaching unit in the state of São Paulo - Brazil, 2003 - 2013

Abstract: We conducted a transversal retrospective study with secondary data collection from 25 cases of sporotrichosis, treated at a teaching unit in inner São Paulo (Brazil), between the years 2003-2013. We found that the prevalence was higher in men (72%), rural workers (44%) and those living in rural areas (60%), with an average age of 42.48 years. The median between the onset of lesions and diagnosis was six weeks. Lesions predominated in the upper limbs (92%), and were classified as lymphocutaneous (80%) and fixed… Show more

“…[14][15][16] In the local context, the largest sporotrichosis case series have been reported in Southern and Southeastern Brazil, the main endemic areas of the disease. [17][18][19] There is little sporotrichosis-related information in the state of Espírito Santo, [20][21][22][23] also located within southeastern Brazil. In this way, our findings could be used in the state health surveillance program, for understanding and comparing the actual disease epidemiological changing pattern in the country.…”

“…The primary lesion develops at the site of skin inoculation, commonly hands and arms. After some days to weeks it progresses to nodules along the lymphatic tract [2]. Patients are otherwise healthy, afebrile and well.…”

“…In a large outbreak that occurred in gold mines of South Africa in more than 3000 miners, none of them had disseminated disease. Pulmonary sporotrichosis via inhalation of Sporotrichum displays a form radiographically indistinguishable from tuberculosis and histoplasmosis in patients with severe underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and alcoholism [2,3]. Granulomatous tenosynovitis and carpal tunnel syndrome have also been described [4].…”

“…More than ten years after the publication of the results of Rosa et al (2005), in a recent study evaluating 25 patients with S. schenckii infection in the state of São Paulo conducted by Marques et al (2015), despite the small size of the sample, a high prevalence of the disease was also found in male individuals, mostly rural workers, who also had their upper limbs as the region most affected by the microorganism. This study differed from others (Oyarce et al, 2016;Rosa et al, 2005) because it emphasized sporotrichosis in its lymphocutaneous form as the most prevalent in the majority of individuals followed up.…”
