Brazilian Spotted Fever: the importance of dermatological signs for early diagnosis

Abstract: Brazilian spotted fever is an acute febrile infectious disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, transmitted by tick bite. As this disease is rare and has high mortality rates in Brazil, the clinical aspects and epidemiological data may help the diagnosis. We report a case of Brazilian spotted fever in a 19-year-old patient who presented maculopapular exanthema in the palmar region and upper limbs, lymphadenopathy, fever, chills, headache, conjunctival hyperemia, nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, myalgia, developing n… Show more

“…In BSF, maculopapular exanthema is the main clinical manifestation, but 9%–12% of infected individuals may not present this sign, thus causing difficulty in making the diagnosis. Furthermore, the initial symptoms of BSF are nonspecific and may be confounded with those of other diseases such as dengue and leptospirosis, which present high incidences in the state of São Paulo (Angerami et al., 2009; Couto et al., 2015). In Brazil, diseases are grouped through syndromic surveillance, according to their most frequent characteristics, and this takes epidemiological characteristics into account, in order to differentiate BSF from other exanthematous diseases.…”
