Abstract: BACKGROUND HIV/AIDS-Associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome includes changes in body fat distribution, with or without metabolic changes. The loss of fat from the face, called facial lipoatrophy, is one of the most stigmatizing signs of the syndrome. OBJECTIVESTo evaluate the effect of FL treatment using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implants on disease progression, assessed by viral load and CD4 cell count. METHODS This was a prospective study of 44 patients treated from July 2009 to December 2010. Male and female … Show more

“…The major finding of this study was the high frequency (>80%) of insufficient levels of vitamin D, as well as a high consumption of dietary fat, along with a sizable proportion of overweight and obese patients 21 . Thus, nutritional intervention is necessary, possibly including supplementation of vitamin D. There are several causes for the high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency, even in low-latitude regions.…”

“…Lichtenstein et al 46 studied a cohort of 1077 patients with a mean age of 41 years (85% men) and Segatto et al 42 evaluated 42 patients (55% men) and found an association between the higher levels of TCD4+ cells and lipodystrophy among individuals in treatment with ART. Therefore, this therapy tends to improve one's immune status, with a consequently slower progression of the disease and lower incidence of death, but is associated with the emergence of HIV-associated lipodystrophy 34,42,[47][48][49] .…”

“…Subcutaneous filling with PMMA is also widely used in patients with HIV/AIDS associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome [13,14] as well as in Romberg hemifacial atrophy, reconstructing lost angles and contours due to volume reduction by fat reabsorption (lipoatrophy). PMMA was the best choice for the case because it is a non-toxic material, which does not induce hypersensitivity or foreign body reactions, which does not degenerate over time or induce calcification, because it is chemically inert and easily implantable.…”
