Purpose: To observe the behavioral states presented by premature newborns in response to gustatory stimulation. Methods: Experimental, analytical and double-blind study. Ninety premature newborns born in a public maternity hospital in Sergipe took part in the test which was filmed and divided into three parts of five minutes. In the first and last, there was no stimulus; in the second, the gustatory stimulation was applied and the newborn children were divided into two groups (water or analysis for sucrose 12%). The observed behavioral states were deep sleep, light sleep, drowsy, alert, agitated/irritated and crying. The data were statistically analyzed. Results: In the sucrose group, during and after stimulation, the correlation was strong in the light sleep and alert behavioral states and decreased in the drowsy, agitated/irritated and crying states. In the water group there was an increase in correlation in the agitated/irritated and crying states after stimulation. Conclusion:The continuity or change of the behavioral state of the premature newborns was positively influenced by the administration of gustatory stimulus, pointing to the possibility of using sucrose in benefit of the favorable behavioral states of that population. Na primeira e na última, não houve estímulo; na segunda aconteceu estimulação gustativa, sendo que os recém-nascidos foram divididos em dois grupos (água ou sacarose para análise 12%). Os estados comportamentais observados foram sono profundo, sono leve, sonolento, alerta, irritado/agitado e choro. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente. Resultados:No grupo sacarose houve correlação forte nos estados comportamentais sono leve e alerta, durante e após a estimulação, e redução de correlação nos estados sonolento, agitado/irritado e choro.Já no grupo água, após a estimulação houve aumento de correlação nos estados agitado/irritado e choro. Conclusão: A permanência ou mudança do estado comportamental do recém-nascido prematuro foi influenciada positivamente pela administração de estímulo gustativo, apontando para o possível uso da sacarose na contribuição de estados comportamentais favoráveis nessa população.

Resumo: O refluxo gastroesofágico é encontrado em 25% dos bebês e pode acarretar vários prejuízos para o desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão integrativa da literatura buscando verificar se há publicações relacionando alterações da deglutição com o quadro de refluxo gastroesofágico em recém-nascidos e lactentes. A pesquisa foi realizada consultando os sites da Bireme e da PubMed. Os unitermos utilizados foram refluxo gastroesofágico, recém-nascido e lactente, em português e os correspondentes em inglês. Os descritores foram utilizados pareados, pois isolados abrangia muitos textos com temáticas diferentes da de interesse. Os trabalhos selecionados foram dos últimos dez anos. Não houve limite de tempo. De 1184 artigos da Bireme e 1600 da PubMed analisados a partir da aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, restaram 23 artigos, sendo a maioria voltada aos sinais, sintomas e diagnóstico do RGE. Dois artigos abordaram o RGE e a deglutição, demonstrando que pode haver ou não relação entre RGE e disfagia orofaríngea em recém nascidos e lactentes, sendo que a escassez de pesquisas com essa temática demonstrou a necessidade de novos estudos abordando os aspectos patofisiológicos envolvidos.

Introduction Technological advances have provided a large variety of instruments to view the swallowing event, aiding in the evaluation, diagnosis, and monitoring of disturbances. These advances include electromyography of the surface, dynamic video fluoroscopy, and most recently sonar Doppler. Objective To characterize swallowing sounds in typical children through the use of sonar Doppler. Method Thirty newborns participated in this prospective study. All newborns received breast milk through either their mother's breasts or bottles during data collection. The newborns were placed in either right lateral or left lateral positions when given breast milk through their mother's breasts and in a sitting position when given a bottle. There were five variables measured: initial frequency of sound wave (FoI), frequency of the first peak of the sound wave (FoP1), frequency of the second peak of the sound wave (FoP2), initial intensity and final sound wave (II and IF), and swallowing length (T), the time elapsed from the beginning until the end of the analyzed acoustic signal measured by the audio signal, in seconds. Results The values obtained in the initial frequency of the babies had a mean of 850 Hz. In terms of frequency of first peak, only three presented with a subtle peak, which was due to the elevated larynx position. Conclusion The use of sonar Doppler as a complementary exam for clinical evaluations is of upmost importance because it is nonintrusive and painless, and it is not necessary to place patients in a special room or expose them to radiation.
