Abstract: The study consists of a taxonomic treatment of the Araceae of Ceará, a state lying within Brazil's semi-arid region. The aroid flora shows greater similarity to those of central Brazil and Amazonia than to the Atlantic forest. Most species occur in humid forest fragments - the "florestas serranas". Geophytes are also found in caatinga and dry forest (Taccarum ulei) and lithophytes on rock outcrops in dry forest (Philodendron acutatum). Floating aquatics occur in ponds and lakes throughout the state (Pistia str… Show more

“…Throughout the existing literature, many works have applied the term helophyte when referring the Montrichardia life‐form (Mayo et al , Herrera et al , Mirouze et al , Silva et al , de Andrade et al ); other studies consider that Montrichardia is an emerging macrophyte (Croat , Lopes et al , b). According to Mayo et al (), aroid helophytes are plants which grow in swampy habitats or along river and stream margins.…”

“…The average annual temperature varies between 22 and 27 °C and average annual rainfall varies between 800 and 2,800 mm (IMESC 2008). The dry period varies from five to six months, from June to November/ December, when the water deficit reaches 150-300 mm (Golfari 1980;Jesus et al 1986), with the driest period between July and October and the highest concentration Species identifications were carried out with the aid of a binocular stereomicroscope Stemi DV4 ZEISS ® and specialized literature (Hegelmaier 1878;Landolt 1986;Pott and Cervi 1999;Pott 2002;Andrade et al 2013;Pereira et al 2016;Freitas et al 2017;Coelho 2018;Lourenço and Bove 2019) and also by comparison with herbarium specimens identified and deposited in the herbaria of NY, K, RB, MO, and BHCB (acronyms according to Thiers 2019). The names of the authors follow Brummitt and Powell (1992).…”

“…Many researches reported about the effect of altitudinal gradients factor could determine the distribution of many plant families in Doi Inthanon National Park [30,31] and Doi Suthep-Pui National Park [32,33]. In South Korea on the ridge of the Baekdudaegan Mountains [34] and in China at Gauncen Mountain [35], the latitude and altitude had effects on plant species richness, diversity and community and different species were also found in Malaysia [36] and Brazil [37]. However, the difference of species distribution must be from other factors: light intensity, soil texture, soil pH and soil moisture content differed by forest type and forest subtype, deciduous or evergreen [32,33,[38][39][40].…”
