Topical antiinflammatory activity and chemical composition of the epicuticular wax from the leaves of Eugenia beaurepaireana (Myrtaceae)

Abstract: In order to verify the topical antiinflammatory effect of epicuticular wax from leaves of Eugenia beaurepaireana, it was tested in mice croton oil-induced inflammation. Our findings show that topical application of Eugenia beaurepaireana epicuticular wax was significantly active in inhibiting both oedema (Inhibitory dose 50 % (I D 50 ) = 0.31 (0.26 -0.39) mg.ear -1 , inhibition = 79 ± 6 %) and tissue myeloperoxidase activity (indicative of polymorphonuclear leukocytes influx) (I D 50 =0.34 (0.20 -0.41) mg.ear … Show more

“…The essential oil of E. pyriformis showed moderate antibacterial potential against the gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) with MIC values of 250 and 125 μg.mL -1 , respectively. A previous study using the essential oil obtained from E. umbelliflora and E. brasiliensis showed an MIC of 119 and 156 μg.mL -1 , respectively, against S. aureus [24]. The essential oil from E. axillaris had an MIC of 625 µg.mL -1 for S. aureus.…”

“…Studies on E. beaurepairiana (Kiaersk.) D. Legrand demonstrated that the leaf of this species has anti-infl ammatory properties when topically administered (Magina et al, 2009). In a revision by Auricchio & Bacchi (2003) on E. unifl ora L. (Brazilian cherry), different investigations confi rmed the analgesic, anti-infl ammatory, anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic effects of this species.…”

“…The specimen from Santa Catarina (Brazil southern) was rich in viridiflorol (17.7%), followed by β- (13.2%) and α-pinene (11.2%) [ 29 ]. E. beaurepairiana oils from Santa Catarina state (Brazil southern) showed high amounts of cyclic sesquiterpene hydrocarbons with germacrane/caryophyllane/cadinane skeleton such as bicyclogermacrene (7.2–14.3%), germacrene D (1.6–8.6%), ( E )-caryophyllene (6.4–8.0%), and δ-cadinene (4.9–7.2%) [ 30 , 31 ].…”
