Perilestes eustaquioi sp. nov. and new distributional records of Perilestidae (Odonata) in Brazil

Abstract: All content of the journal, except where identified, is licensed under a Creative Commons attribution-type BY. Perilestidae contains 19 species in two Neotropical genera-Perilestes Hagen in Selys-Longchamps, 1862 and Perissolestes Kennedy, 1941-distinguished by venational characters (GARRISON et al. 2010). With their characteristically long and slender abdomens, the habit of perching with the abdomen hanging vertically and secluded in dense forest habitats, the Perilestidae are often inconspicuous and easily o… Show more

“…The three species have wide distributions, and all of them were previously recorded in countries neighboring with Colombia. A. jessei was previously recorded at Guyana, Peru and Brazil (Leonard, 1977;IUCN, 2020); P. solutus includes Brazil and Suriname (Bastos et al, 2019;Belle, 2002;Calvão et al, 2014;Garcia-Júnior & Picanco-Souto, 2021;Machado, 2015); and N. minuta has a broader distribution including Cuba, Suriname, Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guyana, United States of America, Guatemala, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago (De Marmels, 1984;Belle, 2002;Ramírez et al, 2000;Paulson & Dunkle, 2021;GBIF, 2021). The new reports of these species for Colombia highlight the importance of studying the odonatofauna, as much remains to be discovered.…”

“…It has short wings (20-25 mm) and very long, slender and colour-banded abdomens (40-56 mm) (Williamson and Williamson 1924;Haber and Wagner, 2014). It is a small family, now comprising two Neotropical genera (Perilestes Hagen in Selys Longchamps, 1862 andPerissolestes Kennedy, 1941) and 19 species (Dijkstra et al, 2011(Dijkstra et al, , 2014Machado, 2015;Schorr & Paulson, 2015). The adults of recent Perilestidae often perch on plant stems or dead twigs near streams and frequent the understory and glades within dense forest, thus making them easily overlooked in the field.…”
