Abstract: 250 mm), or "leaf bank". We analyzed a total of 22 ecomorphological attributes of Astyanax intermedius Eigenmann, 1908 (127 individuals) and Astyanax rivularis (Lütken, 1875) (238 individuals) adults. We detected significant ecomorphological differences between the populations of A. rivularis and A. intermedius from habitats with different types of substrates. However, the two species did not show the same morphological differences depending on the type of substrate. These results confirmed the hypothesis that… Show more

“…Our results suggest that other species of Characiformes may be dominant in impacted streams. In fact, many species (particulary Characidae) of this order are active water column swimmers (Souza et al 2014). Their ability to exploit the entire water column makes them greatly flexible regarding feeding items (Moraes et al 2013).…”

“…As a behavioural characteristic, animals of this genus present difficulty to pass through geographical barriers and tend to isolate themselves in different populations (Shibatta et al, 2002). This characteristic results in decreasing genetic variability between populations, which directly reflects the observed ecomorphological differences (Souza et al, 2014).…”

“…Among the species of this genus, Astyanax rivularis is an endemic species of the São Francisco River basin (Fricke et al, 2019). This basin crosses the Serra da Canastra, a mountain range considered a biodiversity hotspot and located in the southern centre of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil (Pasa et al, 2019;Souza et al, 2014). A. rivularis specimens are small, omnivorous and diurnal animals that actively swim in the water column (Casatti & Castro, 1998;Casatti & Castro, 2006).…”

“…These data expand that one by Moreira-Filho and Bertollo [2], who proposed that species of A. scabripinnis complex would be morphologically adapted into a wide range of environments. Recent studies reinforce the great morphological plasticity of the genus and demonstrate that different species in the same environment could present distinct phenotypic adaptations [28, 29]. Thus, divergent evolutionary mechanisms at each basin could change the adaptive response, since environmental exploration and interaction with other species affect character selection, habitat colonization, and, hence, genes [30].…”
