Abstract: ABSTRACT. We describe the reproductive biology of the coypu, Myocastor coypus (Molina, 1782), in western Japan, as an attempt to contribute to an efficient population control program of the coypu population. A total of 212 specimens (113 males and 99 females) were collected in the Tottori prefecture from February 2010 to January 2012. From the age estimation based on body weight and molar eruption pattern, we determined that both males and females reach sexual maturity at 4-6 months of age. Of the 72 mature fe… Show more

“…We reiterate the importance of assigning minimum expected values for Occupied cells and Annual increase occupied cells. Nutria are considered a highly fecund species, with early maturation, multiple litters per year and litter sizes of 4-6.5 offspring (Willner et al 1979;Runami et al 2013;Brown 1975). In the Delaware management zone (Fig.…”

“…This is equivalent to 0.006% of the zone area, which could be considered well below the expected minimum. This is appropriate given that nutria is a cold sensitive species (Gosling and Baker 1989;Runami et al 2013), and this area is at their northern physiological limit (Hilts et al 2019), which could result in a low population growth rate. Individuals in this population have been observed to huddle in large groups during cold weather periods to conserve heat among conspecifics (Pepper pers.…”

“…Indeed, nutrias tend to thrive and propagate rapidly in areas with mild winters [62,68]. Although cold weather has been identified as a significant factor limiting the reproduction and range expansion of nutrias [25,69,70], ongoing climate change may lead to range expansion of the species [26].…”
