O estudo da microestrutura dos pelos pode ser aplicado em diversas áreas, como: zoologia, ecologia, ciências forenses, arqueologia, epidemiologia e paleontologia, além de ser uma ferramenta útil e importante na identificação das espécies de mamíferos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar os padrões da microestrutura cuticular dos pelos de 68 espécies de morcegos ocorrentes no Brasil. Foram coletados pelos do dorso de espécimes depositados em coleção científica (via úmida). Posteriormente esses pelos foram prensados em lâminas para microscopia junto a uma fina camada de esmalte incolor, com o objetivo de marcar a impressão cuticular, que foi observada em microscópio óptico e comparada com literatura específica. As impressões cuticulares foram classificadas em oito padrões morfológicos: (1) folidáceo estreito, (2) conoidal liso, (3) conoidal contínuo liso, (4) conoidal ornamentado largo, (5) conoidal ornamentado descontínuo, (6) conoidal ornamentado dentado, (7) conoidal liso com bráctea e (8) ondeado oblíquo. Foi possível a diferenciação em nível de Família ou Subfamília. A partir da morfologia cuticular dos pelos foi construída uma chave para identificação de pelos de morcegos até o nível de família ou Subfamília (no caso de Phyllostomidae).

Intraspecific communication is integral to the behavioural ecology of solitary carnivores, but observing and quantifying their communication behaviours in natural environments is difficult. Our systematic literature review found that basic information on scent marking is completely lacking for 23% of all felid species, and information on 21% of other felid species comes solely from one study of captive animals. Here we present results of the first systematic investigation of the scent marking behaviours of Sunda clouded leopards in the wild. Our observations using motion-triggered video cameras in Indonesian Borneo are novel for clouded leopards, and contrary to previous descriptions of their behaviour. We found that clouded leopards displayed 10 distinct communication behaviours, with olfaction, scraping, and cheek rubbing the most frequently recorded. We also showed that males make repeated visits to areas they previously used for marking and that multiple males advertise and receive information at the same sites, potentially enhancing our ability to document and monitor clouded leopard populations. The behaviours we recorded are remarkably similar to those described in other solitary felids, despite tremendous variation in the environments they inhabit, and close a key gap in understanding and interpreting communication behaviours of clouded leopards and other solitary felids.

Mammals play important ecological roles in tropical regions but are difficult to study due to discrete habits, low population densities, and large home ranges. Thus, the use of attractive substances has frequently been adopted to quantify the distribution and abundance of elusive mammals. However, the insight generated from studies using attractants is often limited by a lack of methodological standardization. To inform the use of attractants in the Neotropics, we reviewed 30 years of the scientific literature that used some type of attractant in mammal studies. From a total of 60 studies, the majority (65%) did not use any control (or pseudocontrol) in their sampling design and only 40% used some statistical test to explicitly evaluate the efficiency of the attractant used. A wide range of edible (animal or vegetal origin) and inedible substances (e.g., scent lures) were used alone or in combination and the effects differed greatly among orders and species. Most studies (67%) targeted or registered carnivores, and this order had the largest number of substances (edible and inedible) used across all studies. There seems to be only a consensus in the use and attraction effect with frugivorous bats (Phyllostomidae) with fruits, essential oils, and floral compounds. The lack of standardization of use of attractants in mammal studies undermines the comparability of results among studies. We conclude with some general guidelines to maximize comparability among studies and to enhance the potential usefulness of the use of attractants for mammals.
