T he cosmopolitan Nymphalidae represents one of the largest butterfly families, with about 7,200 species (Freitas and Brown, 2004). Among Nymphalidae, the subfamily Heliconiinae was reported exclusive to the Neotropics (Fox et al., 1965). In this subfamily, the tribe Acraeini have been reported in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world, especially in the Ethiopian region (Van Son, 1963). The genus Acraea (Fabricius, 1807) is widely distributed across the Paleotropics, with Africa recording greater prevalence compared to Asia (Larsen, 2005). Eltringham (1912), divided the genus into nineteen groups while, Van Son (1963), divided the Southern African species into twentythree groups based on their genitalia (Henning, 1992). The genus Acraea is almost confined to the Abstract | This study was intended to compare the immature stages of Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus 1758) (tawny coster) relative to habitat types, phenotype, and gender in Sarawak, Borneo. The nymphalid butterfly tawny coster is widely distributed throughout the Indian and Sri Lankan region and has expanded its distribution range southward through Southeast Asia and Australia. Currently establishing its population in Kalimantan, it was firstly detected in Sarawak in 2013. Comparative observations on the life-cycle were conducted in relation to the urbanization levels. Passiflora foetida was recorded as the primary host plant of this species. Fecundity in a single cohort varied from 30 to 85 eggs, whereas eggs were oriented on the underside marginal areas of host plant leaves. The developmental time of A. terpsicore to complete its life cycle took an average of 30 ± 3.01 days with a total of five larval instars. The ontogenesis of larvae was accomplished without any disruption of diapause. The female adults were ochreous orange in color with a wingspan of about 50-60 mm. The males were brighter orange in color and had a wingspan of about 40-50 mm. The population index was found to be common throughout the year but declined during months with higher precipitation. Being an exotic species, A. terpsicore is likely to keep track by feeding on its primary and famous P. foetida voraciously, in this newly invaded region. For future perspectives, a frequent investigation is suggested to countercheck the host plant dis-palatability and its role of becoming an invasive pest.

La información escasa y fragmentada que existe para el nororiente colombiano, y particularmente sobre el orden Lepidoptera, condujo a la revisión del material depositado en la Colección Entomológica de la Corporación Autónoma Regional para la Defensa de la Meseta de Bucaramanga - CDMB. De este modo, se presentan resultados de la revisión de las mariposas de la tribu Acraeini recolectadas en varias cuencas hidrográficas en el marco del Proyecto de Caracterización del área de jurisdicción de la CDMB. Se examinaron 219 ejemplares agrupados en 10 especies de los géneros Abananote Potts, 1943, Altinote Potts, 1943 y Actinote Hübner, [1819]. Las sinopsis de las especies es: A. hylonome, A. neleus, A. stratonice, A. eresia, A. dicaeus, A. anteas, A. latior, A. callianthe, A. pellenea y A. trinacria. La especie más abundante fue A. anteas con el 25,11% del material recolectado, y las menos abundantes fueron A. eresia y A. callianthe con un solo ejemplar. El análisis de la calidad del inventario estimó una riqueza potencial de 11,36 especies, lo cual indica que es posible que falten una o dos especies más por ser registradas para la zona. Se realizan los primeros registros para el departamento de Santander de A. stratonice, A. latior, A. anteas, A. pellenea, y A. trinacria, con lo cual se contribuye al conocimiento y mejor entendimiento de la entomofauna de esta región de Colombia.

Animals sometimes have prominent projections on or near their heads serving diverse functions such as male combat, mate attraction, digging, capturing prey, sensing or defence against predators. Some butterfly larvae possess a pair of long frontal projections; however, the function of those projections is not well known. Hestina japonica butterfly larvae have a pair of long hard projections on their heads (i.e., horns). Here we hypothesized that they use these horns to protect themselves from natural enemies (i.e., predators and parasitoids). Field surveys revealed that the primary natural enemies of H. japonica larvae were Polistes wasps. Cage experiments revealed that larvae with horns intact and larvae with horns removed and fitted with horns of other individuals succeeded in defending themselves against attacks of Polistes wasps significantly more often than larvae with horns removed. We discuss that the horns counter the paper wasps’ hunting strategy of first biting the larvae’s ‘necks’ and note that horns evolved repeatedly only within the Nymphalidae in a phylogeny of the Lepidoptera. This is the first demonstration that arthropods use head projections for physical defence against predators.
