Introduction: Many prey species around the world are suffering declines due to a variety of interacting causes such as land use change, climate change, invasive species and novel disease. Recent studies on the ecological roles of top-predators have suggested that lethal top-predator control by humans (typically undertaken to protect livestock or managed game from predation) is an indirect additional cause of prey declines through trophic cascade effects. Such studies have prompted calls to prohibit lethal top-predator control with the expectation that doing so will result in widespread benefits for biodiversity at all trophic levels. However, applied experiments investigating in situ responses of prey populations to contemporary top-predator management practices are few and none have previously been conducted on the eclectic suite of native and exotic mammalian, reptilian, avian and amphibian predator and prey taxa we simultaneously assess. We conducted a series of landscape-scale, multi-year, manipulative experiments at nine sites spanning five ecosystem types across the Australian continental rangelands to investigate the responses of sympatric prey populations to contemporary poison-baiting programs intended to control top-predators (dingoes) for livestock protection.

Mamíferos de médio e grande porte de uma área agricultável em Terezópolis (GO) com notas sobre métodos de amostragem Medium-large sized mammals of an agricultural area in Terezópolis (Goiás State) with sampling methods notes Resumo O Cerrado possui uma grande variedade de habitats e ecossistemas, sendo um dos principais desafios para sua conservação demonstrar a importância que a biodiversidade desempenha no funcionamento desses ecossistemas. A diversidade de mamíferos no Brasil atinge números expressivos e é considerada uma das maiores do planeta, representada atualmente por 701 espécies. Os objetivos do seguinte trabalho foram registrar quais espécies de mamíferos de médio e grande porte ocorrem na Unidade Agroecoló-gica Fazenda Santa Branca e fazer uma comparação da efetividade de três métodos de amostragem. Para o presente trabalho, foram utilizados três métodos de coleta de dados: censo diurno e noturno, 20 parcelas de areia armadas com diferentes tipos de iscas e armadilhamento fotográfico. Em nove meses de coleta, foram registradas 16 espécies de mamíferos, pertencentes a oito ordens e 11 famílias. A estimativa de riqueza feita pelo Jackknife 1ª ordem aproximou-se da estabilização, demonstrando que o esforço amostral não foi suficiente. Foram estimadas 19,56±4,47 espécies. A utilização de três métodos diferentes de amostragem se mostrou conveniente, uma vez que os três registraram espé-cies exclusivas. O índice de similaridade Morisita-Horn mostrou que a composição de espécies entre os métodos apresentou baixa similaridade entre si (censo e armadilhamento fotográfico: 18%; censo e parcelas de areia: 13%; armadilhas fotográficas e parcelas de areia: 40%). Uma análise de variância não demonstrou diferenças significativas (F(2,16) = 0,20804, p= 0,81434) entre as riquezas mensuradas por cada método. Os resultados indicam que, considerando o uso intenso da área para agricultura, pecuária e turismo, a Fazenda Santa Branca possui uma fauna de mamíferos de médio e grande porte rica. Assim, é importante que se tomem medidas a fim de mitigar os conflitos existentes entre humanos e animais silvestres para dar continuidade à produção agropecuária bem como manter a fauna local, prevista em lei, através da manutenção das áreas de preservação permanente e reserva legal da propriedade.Palavras-chave: armadilhas fotográficas, censo, parcelas de areia, Cerrado, mastofauna. We investigated the behaviour patterns of coastal (relatively stationary in shallow waters) and migratory frontal (offshore) types of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in Icelandic waters using information from data storage tags (DSTs). Consistent and repeated patterns of migration were observed for both coastal and frontal cod, with characteristic DST profiles repeated from year to year. The migration timing in 2 successive years was close to being synchronous, suggesting that the onset of migration was consistent from year to year. A tidal location model suggested that the feeding migrations of cod in Icelandic waters were undertaken in groups or shoals during the whole year. The overall stability of the behaviour patterns of both types suggests that coastal and frontal individuals use different behavioural strategies which might either be related to food availability/ competition or genetic control.
