“…prolatus , and P. tegatus ) and, considering the great diversity of species within this genus (e.g. Lucena & Malabarba, 2010), the discrepancy in the coding of this character may represent interspecific variation. Mirande (2010) coded Phenacogaster tegatus as having two series of rakers along the first epibranchial, but specimens of the species examined herein all lack the trailing series and the taxon was coded as state 1.…”

“…Jupiaba keithi is recorded from the Marowijne and Mana rivers of French Guyana (Zanata 1997); we found Jupiaba keithi in the Oyapock River. The recently described Phenacogaster wayana from Corantijn to Approuague rivers (Lucena and Malabarba 2010) is formally reported to Rio Amapá in Brazil. Odontostilbe gracilis occurs in a few places of the French Guyana (Planquette et al 1996); we collected only a single specimen in the Rio Amapá.…”

“…Expeditions had permission to collect wild species in Brazil under ICMBio license number 13.843-1 to Claudio Oliveira. Species identifications to the lowest taxonomic level were conducted consulting the taxonomic literature and identification keys (Géry 1977; Planquette et al 1996; Keith et al 2000; Le Bail et al 2000; Lucena and Malabarba 2010; Sidlauskas and Vari 2012; Peixoto et al 2015) and updated with Eschmeyer et al (2016). Classification follows the current phylogenetic arrangement of bony fishes (Betancur-R et al 2014).…”

“…Additional male behaviours and morphological characters, such as courtship displays and fin colour and shape, also appear to play a role in mate choice in many fishes (Forsgren et al ., ), with fin variation being commonly observed in various fish groups (Py Daniel & Cox‐Fernandes, ). The differences in male and female anal‐fin shape observed herein is often used as a character in the study of Characidae systematics (Miquelarena & Aquino, ; Canan & Gurgel, ; Miquelarena & Aquino, ; Bertaco & Lucinda, ; Carvalho, ; Carvalho & Bertaco, ; Matheus, ; Bertaco et al, ; Carvalho et al, ; Lucena & Malabarba, ; Carvalho, ; Jerep & Malabarba, ). Nevertheless, there can be intrageneric variation in this pattern; for example, anal‐fin shape is similar in males and females of H. togoi (Oyakawa et al, ) and Hyphessobrycon nicolasi Miquelarena & López, (Miquelarena & López, ).…”
