New records of Parvalona parva (Crustacea: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) from Brazil, with first description of the male

Abstract: DADAY (1905) described Leydigia parva from Paraguay; later, this taxon was transferred to Alona Baird, 1843(Smirnov, 1971). However, due to its unique characteristics, VAN DAMME et al. (2005) created the new genus Parvalona to allocate this species.Until recently, the only known specimens of Parvalona parva (Daday, 1905) were those of Daday. VAN DAMME et al. (2005) reported a few parthenogenetic females from Lençóis Maranhenses, Northeast Brazil, and giving the scarcity of records, suggested that P. parva was … Show more

“…In South America, its occurrence has been previously reported from Paraguay and Brazil (Daday 1905;Van Damme et al 2005;Elmoor-Loureiro et al 2009;Van Damme and Dumont 2010). Nevertheless, Van Damme et al (2005) and Elmoor-Loureiro et al (2009) concluded that Daday's (1905) location was erroneously placed to Brazil, and in reality it is located in Argentina, and this species is present in Colombia also.…”

“…Nauplius, 25: e2017029 Remarks: The only species of the genus (Van Damme et al, 2005;Elmoor-Loureiro et al, 2009), it has a very particular morphology: body sub-ovoid, rostrum short and protruding, three main head pores connected, postabdomen wide with large and broad postanal portion, marginal denticles in groups.…”

“…Distribution: Possibly in the Neotropics (Van Damme et al, 2005;Elmoor-Loureiro et al, 2009;Fuentes-Reines, 2015). In Brazil, P. parva occurs in the Tocantins/Araguaia, Paraná, Atlântico Nordeste Ocidental and Nordeste Oriental hydrographic regions (Elmoor-Loureiro, 2017 Remarks: Species named in many studies as Disparalona dadayi or Phryxura dadayi, but Smirnov (1996) considered Alonella dadayi as the valid name for this species.…”

“…Although they harbor up to 70% of the known cladoceran species (Elmor-Loureiro 2000, Forró et al 2008, it was only recently that wetlands of the Brazilian Cerrado were added to research aimed at taxonomic knowledge for these organisms. As a result, new species were described and new geographic patterns were established for the phytophilous cladoceran (Sinev & Hollwedel 2002, Serafim-Junior et al 2003, Elmoor-Loureiro 2007, Elmoor-Loureiro et al 2009, Sousa et al 2014.…”
