Abstract: The helminthological examination of nine individuals of Aetobatus cf. narinari (spotted eagle ray; raya pinta; arraia pintada) revealed the presence of an undescribed species of cestode of the genus Acanthobothrium. The stingrays were collected from four locations in México: Laguna Términos, south of Isla del Carmen and the marine waters north of Isla del Carmen and Champotón, in the State of Campeche, and Isla Holbox, State of Quintana Roo. The new species, nominated Acanthobothrium marquesi, is a category 3 … Show more

“…The present study marks the first to report species of Acanthobothrium from South Africa. With the addition of these four species, a total of 207 valid species of Acan thobothrium are currently recognised worldwide , Franzese and Ivanov 2018, 2020, Maleki et al 2018, Rodríguez-Ibarra et al 2018, Zaragoza-Tapia et al 2019, 2020, making the taxonomic classification of new species, and intrageneric comparisons between congeners within this genus taxing (Ghoshroy and Caira 2001). Hence, in the interest of simplifying this matter, Ghoshroy and Caira (2001) have developed a category classification system on the basis of four morphological characteristics.…”

“…However, Pentaloculum macrocephalum Alexander, 1963, from the blind electric ray, Typhlonarke aysoni (Hamilton) (Torpediniformes, Narkidae), is euapolytic (Eudy et al 2019). Only six of the almost 200 valid species of Acanthobothrium (see Caira et al 2017, Franzese and Ivanov 2018, Maleki et al 2018, Rodríguez-Ibarra et al 2018, Zaragoza-Tapia et al 2019 are considered to be hyperapolytic (see Franzese and Ivanov 2018). Five of these six hyperapolytic species of Acanthobothrium, namely A. lintoni Goldstein, Henson et Schlicht, 1968, A. indicum Subhapradha, 1955, A. pearsoni Williams, 1962, A. stefaniae Franzese et Ivanov, 2018, and A. margieae Fyler, 2011, in fact, parasitise either torpediniform rays or orectolo- (Yamaguti, 1934).…”

“…To date, 190 valid species of Acanthobothrium have been reported from different regions of the world (Caira et al 2017; Rodríguez-Ibarra et al 2018; Franzese and Ivanov 2018). Forty species of Acanthobothrium have been described from the Pacific coast of the Americas (eleven species from USA, eleven from México, eight from Costa Rica, four from Ecuador, four from Peru, and three from Chile).…”

“…The only other species known from the Pacific Coast of Mexico was described from the more southern state of Jalisco (Monks et al 1996) (see Merlo-Serna and García-Prieto 2016). More recently, A.cartagenensis Brooks & Mayes, 1980 was reported from Quintana Roo, Mexico (Caribbean) (Monks et al 2015a) and A.marquesi was described from Campeche, Mexico (Gulf of Mexico) by Rodríguez-Ibarra et al (2018). As part of a collaborative project to extend the knowledge of the helminth fauna of marine fishes in Mexico, rays were collected from the coastal waters off Acapulco, Guerrero, a region with few studies of the parasites of rays.…”
