Risk factors and anti-Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum antibody occurrence in dogs in João Pessoa, Paraíba state, Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of infections due to Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum and corresponding risk factors among dogs attended at veterinary clinics in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 384 dogs that were attended at 34 veterinary clinics between April 2015 and May 2016. These two agents were diagnosed through the indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFAT). Among the 384 animals evaluated, 37 (9.6%) were positive for … Show more

“…On the other hand, few studies showed higher percentages, for example, Teixeira (2008) detected seropositivity in 62.37% of dogs in the milk producing properties of Maranhão, and Benetti et al (2009) reported positivity in 66.7% of the dogs inhabiting dairy farms in Mato Grosso. In contrast with the results of this study, Brasil et al (2018) reported a frequency of 1.6% anti-N. caninum IgG in dogs of the urban areas of João Pessoa, PB. When compared to the frequency of anti-N. caninum antibodies in dogs of urban areas, higher prevalence of antibodies in rural dogs was observed.…”

“…This questionnaire included epidemiological variables related to general information about the animal's lifestyle and management. To identify possible risk factors for T. gondii infection in these animals, the following variables were selected: sex [52,86], age [5,65], breed [6,56], street access [9,67], contact with cats [12,66], presence of rodents [48], type of food (dry and wet commercial food, meat and embedded, homemade food, offal and other types of food, like fruits and vegetables) [14,79] and water source for animals' consumption [8].…”

“…High anti-T. gondii antibody frequencies have been reported in domestic dogs and cats from Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Iran, Argentina, Portugal, Australia, Colombia, and Chile [1,10,26,30,44,57,58,63,83,86]. In Brazil, the frequency of T. gondii infection in Brazilian pet animal populations can vary from 9 to 70% in dogs and from 0 to 71% in cats [5,9,35,47,50,68,81]. Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity in pets can vary, not only between countries, but also between regions of the same country, and areas of the same city [20].…”

“…Information about the epidemiology of neosporosis and toxoplasmosis has been reported in several places in Brazil, proving the widespread circulation of these protozoans (Acosta et al, 2016;Brasil et al, 2018;Cerqueira-Cézar et al, 2017;Langoni et al, 2014). The presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies has also been reported in different animals, including cattle and dogs, in the state of Mato Grosso (Benetti et al, 2008;Benetti et al, 2009;Boa Sorte et al, 2015;Melo et al, 2012;Rodrigues et al, 2016).…”
