Variables associated with the prevalence of anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in dogs on the tri-border of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in dogs from localities in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná state, Brazil, on the border with Argentina and Paraguay. Blood samples dogs were collected to perform the following serologic tests: immunochromatographic DPP® rapid test, indirect immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA) and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). In 2012, 285 dogs were analyzed on Argentina border, and in 2013, serum samples from 396 dogs on the borde… Show more

“…Continuing with environmental variables, the univariate analysis revealed that the lack of public garbage collection was a risk factor for CVL. Such a result was also reported to contribute to a higher risk for canine and human disease in a previous study (Dias et al, 2018;Lima et al, 2018). According to Oliveira & Araújo (2003), residues in the peridomicile can serve as a shelter and breeding ground for vectors, which may explain why previous occurrence of CVL in the neighborhood in our study was a risk factor for infection.…”

“…Also, biological characterization of parasite isolates and continuous vector surveillance is thus necessary towards decision-making for appropriate actions for controlling this disease transmission among dogs, thereby avoiding the transmission of VL to humans. (Dias et al, 2018).…”

“…Leishmania braziliensis is endemic in the study area, and L. infantum has been recognized since 2012 (Dias et al, 2013;Thomaz Soccol et al, 2017); therefore, to work with specific species of CVL, dogs were subjected to clinical evaluation and identification of the parasite present in the popliteal ganglion. In endemic areas of L. braziliensis, diseased dogs generally have typical well-limited ulcerated lesions with raised edges.…”
