Comparative study of three xenic media culture for cultivation of Balantidium coli strains

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the growth rate of Balantidium coli in three xenic media cultures. Between 2013 and 2015, 10 B. coli isolates obtained from feces of Cynomolgus macaques, and 30 isolates from feces of pigs were studied. An inoculum of 500 trophozoites was transferred to tubes containing LES, TYSGM-9 and Pavlova media. These cultures were evaluated at incubation times of 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. In most of strains analyzed wasn't showed significant difference in the growth rate compa… Show more

“…Data are represented as means ± standard deviation (SD) of three independent experiments (triplicate) nucleoside sources (Merlen et al 1999). The performance of Schneider's is related to the presence of yeast extract, which is a major stimulator of growth in axenic cultures, and it can be a fundamental source of nucleic acids (Barbosa et al 2018). On the other hand, Grace's medium is not an important source of nucleoside, mainly adenosine; thus, it provided lower parasite growth (Francis 2010).…”

“…This fact may be due to the composition of the media, since LIT has hemin, which is the source of heme, an essential compound for continuous growth and multiplication of promastigotes, and it also has liver infusion broth (LIB) that provides extra nucleoside sources (Merlen et al 1999 ). “…Balantidium coli can be cultivated on Boeck and Drbohlav egg serum media and Balamuth media. It can also be cultivated on Pavlova xenic culture media, and the growth of trophozoites can be obtained within 72 h on this media [114].…”
