Abstract: Platynosomiasis is a common feline hepatic disease caused by Platynosomum fastosum (Trematoda -Dicrocoelidae), which is also known as 'lizard poisoning'. Most reports of feline platynosomiasis show that this disease is sporadic and manifests with uncommon lesions; its pathogenicity is still not well understood. This study aimed to describe liver injuries and enzymatic changes associated with natural P. fastosum infection in 47 stray cats in an endemic area. Overall, 38.3% (18/47) of cats were parasitized, and … Show more

“…The prevalence of P. illiciens reported in feline populations of tropical and subtropical countries varies between 15% and 81% (BASU & CHARLES, 2014), which justifies the high frequency of parasitism found in our study. Likewise, the parasite load found in cats from Araguaína showed the same pattern of variation found in Brazil and other countries of tropics (RODRIGUEZ-VIVAS et al, 2004;BRAGA et al, 2016;RAMOS et al, 2017) The low sensitivity of Sheather's test in the present study can be justified by the fact that P. illiciens eggs are heavy and the Sheather's test is a flotation technique, therefore, better diagnosed by sedimentation methods. The intermittent oviposition performed by this parasite in small quantities, also explains the low sensitivity obtained in the tests used in this study (LEAL et al, 2011).…”
