Prevalence and risk factors for Cysticercus tenuicollis in goats and sheep in Paraíba, northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for C. tenuicollis among goats and sheep in slaughterhouses in Paraíba. 390 animals (195 goats and 195 sheep) in the municipalities of Patos and Esperança, Paraíba, Brazil, were inspected between February and May 2014. The prevalence of C. tenuicollis was 39% (76/195) in goats and 17.4% (34/195) in sheep. In both species, most of the cysticerci vesicles were located at the omentum and mesentery. The only risk factor found was extensive sheep farmin… Show more

“…After egg ingestion during grazing on pastures contaminated with faeces of infected canids, the metacestode larval stage develops in ruminant (domestic and wild) causing cysticercosis. Prevalence of cysticercosis is often very high but differs by country and host (Braae et al., 2015; Morais et al., 2017; Nguyen et al., 2016; Oryan et al., 2012; Scala et al., 2015, 2016; Singh et al., 2015; Wondimu et al., 2011).…”

“…The egg then develops into a metacestode larval stage in the intermediate hosts resulting in a disease condition known as cysticercosis. The prevalence of cysticercosis differs by country and host (Braae et al, 2015;Scala et al, 2015;Nguyen et al, 2016), and could reach as high as 63.9% in Africa (Wondimu et al, 2011), 55.5% in Asia (Oryan et al, 2012), 39% in South America (Morais et al, 2017) and 14.6% in Europe (Scala et al, 2015). Although cysticercosis is highly prevalent across the globe, the disease seems to attract less attention probably because it is not zoonotic.…”
