Abstract: One of the measures to control visceral leishmaniosis (VL) in Brazil is the identification and culling of the canine reservoir. There is much controversy concerning this strategy, including the proper identification of positive dogs and the fact that the host-parasite relationship changes over time make it more challenging. A dynamic cohort of 62 dogs was followed every three months using serological and parasitological examinations and PCR. Positivity by PCR was higher than by serology and by parasitological … Show more

“…Therefore, the distinct serological tests might be influenced by this reality as cut-offs are determined using unequivocally diseased animals. These animals have a characteristic serological profile associated with established disease that might not match animals that are at a different stage of disease development 16 . To detect possible similarity patterns between the serological readouts in these animals, a cluster analysis of the tests was performed.…”

“…The rK39-HFBI semi-purified fraction allowed the development of a Plate Trapped Antigen-ELISA for canine visceral leishmaniasis diagnosis. However, since our data relies on a serological panel, its validation against a gold standard (parasitological test) or a 100% specific test (qPCR; Nunes et al, 2015;de Carvalho et al, 2018) still is required. Despite this, our test has shown a good concordance with the results from the official protocol adopted by the Brazilian government, and it shows that plant-produced rK39-HFBI could be used for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis.…”

“…rLci5 ELISA showed a significantly higher persistence of positivity during the follow-up period compared to other diagnostic tests evaluated. While the literature contains longitudinal studies evaluating CVL diagnostic methods, none have attempted to assess the persistence of positive results in a longitudinal manner [ 30 32 ]. Importantly, other studies have evaluated the persistence of diagnostic test results in diseases other than leishmaniasis, such as allergic contact dermatitis, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis [ 33 35 ].…”
