Structure of the parasites communities in two Erythrinidae fish from Amazon river system (Brazil)

Abstract: This study compared the parasite communities of Hoplias malabaricus and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus from Amazon river system. Hoplias malabaricus were infected by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Tetrahymena sp., Urocleidoides eremitus, Braga patagonica, metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, larvae of Contracaecum sp. and larvae of Nomimoscolex matogrossensis. Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus were also infected by these same species of protozoans… Show more

“…For S. jurupari, there was an absence of the body size correlation with the ecological and community descriptors, as well as with the parasite abundance. This may be an indication that the length and body mass of this host, do not in fact exert an influence over the variation of the parasite infracommunities, as also reported for other hosts (Poulin and Fitzgerald 1987;Alcântara and Tavares-Dias 2015).…”

“…Changes in parasite abundance with monoxenic life cycle have been generally considered to be influenced by both the environment and biotic factors (Poulin and Fitzgerald 1987;Rohde et al 1995;Marcogliese et al 2006;ViolanteGonzález et al 2009;Rohlenová et al 2011;Tavares-Dias et al 2014, Alcântara and. For example, monogeneans and protozoans are good indicators of water quality, because they typically infest fish gills and skin, and are exposed to the environment throughout their monoxenic life cycle Chapman et al 2015;Alcântara and Tavares-Dias 2015). Our results indicate that the species composition and species richness of ectoparasites were higher than those for endoparasites.…”

“…Parasites are typically found in communities in which different species coexist in fish of the same host species or in different host species (MUÑOZ et al, 2006;TAVARES & LUQUE, 2008;BELLAY et al, 2013;ALCÂNTARA & TAVARES-DIAS, 2015). Protozoan and monogenoidean ectoparasites are parasites typical of lentic environments, but their reproduction is strongly favored by eutrophized environments like the hydrographic basin of this study (TAKIYAMA et al, 2012).…”

“…Parasitism has been implicated as an important factor in the population dynamics of fish species (POULIN & FITZGERALD, 1987;ALCÂNTARA & TAVARES-DIAS, 2015;PANTOJA et al, 2016). The parasites can be found in host communities and coexists in the same individual of a single host fish species, or in different host fish species (MUÑOZ et al, 2006;TAVARES & LUQUE, 2008;ALARCOS & TIMI, 2012).…”

“…They are piscivorous fish when adults, but juveniles also feed on plankton, crustaceans, insects and seeds. These species are habitually active at twilight and night and do not undertake migration (Santos et al 2006;Soares et al 2011;Alcântara and Tavares-Dias 2015). They are also commonly found in the Amazon River system, which is a complex ecosystem that in-cludes tributary rivers and streams, with floodplains and periodically flooded forest alongside them.…”
